I have cab and box running boards on my dually and they are starting to oxidize. Sinse the truck is in getting paint (including new doors and a right front fender) I like to restore the finish on the diamond plate running boards with a minimum amount of effort. I tried a couple searches and found here. I have polished wheels before so I'm kind of familar with working with aluminum.

Does anyone have any other suggerstions or tips for aluminum runningboard restoration and preservation?

Extreme1,

Try these guys. http://www.eqsolutions.net/

I have an aluminum gooseneck trailer I tow and this stuff cleans great!! I use the Quick red mixed with the blue then follow with a red coat and it cleans like new. You need to be careful the blue to strong will oxidize and turns it milky. The red helps stop that. Anyway this is the only stuff to clean alum.

Good luck Y.

I can, without a doubt, that this is the BEST polish/brightener I have ever used (and I have tried probably 30+ different brands). I have no ties to this company other than I use their products. Be careful with the brightener. It has hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid. <~~~~Baaad Stuff ! But if used per directions, (i. e. gloves, safety glasses, etc... ), it works really really well. I buy mine at Love's Truck Stop. Hope this helps. John

Once you get it cleaned up nice, you might want to look into a product called Zoop Seal. My uncoated aluminum wheels were looking pretty tarnished after a few winters. A month or so ago I spent the time buffing them out, then coated them with Zoop Seal. It's supposed to last at least 2 years. It called a hybrid ceramic coating. It ain't cheap! They have 2 kits. The deluxe one is about $120 but will coat a lot. I don't know how well it will hold up, but we'll see!

See zoopseal.com for specifics. I ordered mine from rodgear.com.

If you have a Truckpro near you should try some of their aluminum trailer brightener. It is cheap, works great and makes my snowmobile trailer look new. Be very careful though... It contains hydroflouric acid which is really nasty if you get it on yourself.

Eagle 1 Etching Mag (wheel) Cleaner and steel wool did the job nicely on my previous trucks running boards with a minimum of effort. Gloves are necessary because this stuff is a mixture of hydrofluoric, phosphoric, and sulfuric acid. The auto store had several differnt types of wheel cleaner, This is the one recommended for bare aluminum/alloy wheels. Do not use this if you have some sort of clear coat on the surface to clean and do not get it on any painted surface. Only needed 1/4 of the spray bottle to clean both running boards. Hope this helps.
