Over and Under for an auto???

Installed tag

I think I may have the need for an engine stand for a 24v ISB real soon. Does anyone know of a place to get one?? I know I can probably get one from the local auto parts places, but the cummins is very heavy and I doubt the junk from Shucks would hold up. I would really like one with wheels so I could roll it around.

And no there is noting wrong with the motor in my truck... I might just have another one to play with :D

Thanks in advance.

John,

You can use an el-cheapo or good engine stand to support an expensive engine. The easiest way I do it is to bolt the mounting plate to the side of the block on the motor mount bosses. Some people may attach to the rear, but not me.

You may have known this allready, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence. But some others might use the advise.

You'll love it when you pull the crank out, it's HEAVY:--) !!

Good luck,

Cousin Billy

Cousin Billy,

I know nothing about engine stands at all so any advice is good for me... heck I really know nothing about the internals of a cummins either, but that is not going to stop me from tearing apart a motor to see the inside. I figure with a service manual and enough tools I can at least take it apart... .

I have been looking online a bit and found some stands... I noticed a big price difference from one place to another. . I will buy one that is rated for 2K lbs just to be safe... any idea where to get one?? Since I don't have a clue, is there a special plat I need to attach to the engine mounts or is it just using the hole the mounts bolt to?/

Engine stand

Try harbor Freight.com, they list a 2000#

Engine stand with casters. they show A photo of it. If you can mount the motor from the side that sounds the best way,IMHO GWD:)

Up date

The engine stand in harbor freight is Listed at 2 Tons, and the item # is 07620-dux

the price listed is $ 189. 99,net weight 290

pounds. GWD

Yep,

All of the above. Usually, you can elongate the slots in the plate by a very little bit and you can bolt it directly to the three mount bosses on the side of the block. I mean the plate which comes with the stand.

Remember, overkill is better when you have nearly a half ton engine hanging on it.

Thats what I was thinking too... its just a short block ISB but it still weighs way more than I want droping on my foot. :D

I built a plate for my OTC 6000LB stand I use for truck and tractor diesels. If the stand you are getting is a typical automotive type stand (with a pipe and handle to roll the engine over) make sure you mount the engine as close to center as possible or they can be a real bear to rool over. The OTC has a 90:1 worm gear drive and does'nt even know the little cummins is there. A 4'X4' stand looks funny with a little 4B out of a backhoe on it

If you buy a stand with manual pivot, make sure you grease it, or you'll never turn that engine :D .

If you're using a lightweight stand, definitely bolt the mounting plate to the engine mount - the leverage exerted with the engine length ways could be scarey if not downright dangerous.

I tried a 1250lb engine stand and had to weld bracing on it before I could trust it. The box section at the base started to distort into a rhombus shape. It's not that it couldn't handle the static load, but as soon as I started to move the engine around, the engine generated more than it's own weight in leverage - even with it mounted side on using the engine mount point.

I recommend a minimum 1T stand or heavily reinforce a 1250lb one.

Thats what I was worried about and I really want to be able to roll it around.

My problem with Northen tool and others is the shipping. I live in Alaska and UPS/FedEx only ship express to Alaska. If I ship it with them the freight would be more than the stand. I need to find someone with good shipping and a good product.

John,

Ship it to Key Trans in Kent, Wa.

They will get it to Anch for 60. 00 from Kent for you.

I used them for my bumper and the EGR brakes stuff.

Great service.

Shipping weight on my 96 12v was 1025#. It was missing the fan, fan clutch and motor mounts. a 1250# cap stand would be marginal when you thing about the added torque when wrenching

I will find a #2000 lb model eventually. The motor is a short block right now so its light, but ithe stand will eventually have a complete motor on it... .
