GA deisel wannabe

1st Gen or 94-98.4 12v ????

Hey guys. . My first post here and I'm gonna be buying a mid to late 90's model CTD. . Probably a 2500 4x4 5speed. . I have a lot of questions regarding what year trucks had what problems. .

The killer dowel pin. . What year trucks could possibly experience this problem?

The problematic lifter pumps. . Is this only on 24v diesels?? What is the fuel delivery setup on 12v's?

Steering box. . What happens?? What years had the problems??

This 53 block thing I've read about. . These have possible cracking problems, right? and what years can they be found in??

Another thing I'm worried about is roasted turbos. . I'm afraid of buying a truck that hasn't been taken care of like it should and has been shut down lots over its life with high egt's. . Is there anyway to tell if the turbo has been "cooked" a little?

NV4500 5th gear problem. . I've seen this mentioned, but not the remedy. . Is this problem on all NV4500's??

I think this is all my current worries. . Is there anything else I should be careful to ask about or look for? Hopefully I can find a good model year and remedy all problems before they occur.

Thanks

Benny

Here is what I know

1. 5 spds all of them have the same possible problem 94-02? If lugged the nut can back off there have been several fixes the best being fully spined main shaft with updated nut.

2. Lift pump problems are only on 24v engines with electric pump 12v engines have a mechanical pump that lasts a long time

3. KDP I believe all 12v and some 24v engines up to 99.

4. 53 blocks 99's for sure maybe earlyer and later? Not sure on all the years this affects

One thing to look at is the afc housing on the injection pump to see if all four screws are the same, one should be striped smooth if pump has not had a "plate" put in it at one time. You can check the turbo shaft end play and axiel play if you pull off the intake hose to the turbo.

Hope you find a nice truck Good Luck

Thanks, bud. I didn't realize 12v had a mechanical lift pump. . That's cool!

IMHO

Not that anyone asked but my PERSONAL advice to a new CTD owner or prespective owner is to go with the 12v. As like mentioned above they are mechanical (little to NO electrical) on the motor or motor components. This will make it easier to diagnose any problems (always hope for none). Having everything controled by a COMP. makes my skin crawl. Again this is all just my personal opinion.

For the record I am looking for a 12v. . Not just for the electrical sake but the other simplicities as well. . But ecu's aren't that bad when you mess with them and learn exactly what they do. . I know I've become much more comfortable over time with 'em in gas motors and much much much prefer them over any carb. . However, we all know that a mechanically controlled diesel is a COMPLETELY different animal than a carb. . :D
