Considering diesel conversion; what should I expect?

Ebay / Chevy C30 Hauler Conversion

A guy I work with is swapping a mechanical c cummins into his '89 F-superduty. He has a 7-speed spicer transmission that he needs a magnetic pickup speedo setup for. Also needs a magnetic pickup tach. Please let me know if you have any info on this kind of stuff. Thanks

Eric

Autometer makes a 5" 6000 rpm diesel tach. part # 6806 and is in summit and jegs for $250. You put magnets on the balancer ad mount the pickup ot the timing cover. Does the transmission have any speed sender on it? If you have any signal on how fast a tire is moving like ABS tone ring, you can use a electric speedo. The autometer speedo will take from 500 pulses a mile to 200,000 pulses.

My jegs catalog makes look smart, right?

If you have to mount magnets, you are using a hall effect pick-up.

A magnetic pickup generates its own field and senses disturbances caused by the passage of ferrous materials like ring-gear teeth. This type of sensor could be used on the flywheel ring gear for a tach (if the tooth count is known). However, if you wanted to use one for speed, you would have to mount it to the rear axle, count teeth on that ring gear and convert for wheel circumference per ring gear revolution.
