I have owned this truck for a couple years now and am very impressed. The low end lug lets me plow better than any powerstoke or gas job around but i would like some more power for towing. I sometimes tow 15k (excavator & trailer) and it does great on flats but doesn't like vt mountains, i just don't have power to stay in 3rd in my getrag so i run about 15-20mph in 2nd on 50mph highways. I was a mechanic for 10yrs so i still do all my own work but am looking for more details about turning up inj pump or other things i should check.

Thanks Brad Greene

Look in the sticky threads the Performance steps is a good start. Basically, get a boost and EGT Guage, do a 366 governor spring, turn the full fuel screw at least 1 turn, play w/ the AFC to your preference of spoolup/smoke, etc, get a really big air filter(search BHAF), and a straight pipe or a full 4" exhaust. After those things are taken care of and you want more, injectors and turbo...

Along with the upgrades mentioned in the sticky threads, dont forget your driving style. I ran into a guy in CO who said he cant go more than 40mph or something up some hills outside Calhan. I asked how many RPMs he turned (had a factory tach), and he said he never let it get over 2000 before shifting:eek:. Point is, dont be afraid to wind it out, run it up to the governor up the hills (or at least start there). The only thing RPms hurt in these engines is your fuel mileage. At least til you get to about 3400-3500 RPM. I can go 30 in 2nd in my 92. 4th tops out around 80.

ALso, check valve adjustment (put them a hair tighter than the book's . 010 & . 020- I run mine at . 009 and . 019- supposed to give a little better top end), fuel filter, timing, etc.

I have to chime in on this one, in regard to the air filter. Yes, some vehicles will greatly benefit from an open air intake, but if you look at the air intake of the 1st. Generation Cummins, you'll find a huge one, which, in fact, is a COLD AIR INTAKE, pulling air directly from an opening in the front of the vehicle, below the right headlight bucket. I believe that it will be very difficult to do any better. An open filter element in the engine compartment, even a big one, will inhale hot air and thus not be as effective as the stock air filter element sucking in the cold air from outside.

Tell me I'm wrong. But if you do, tell me why . . .

not wrong...

you're absolutely right. I put a homebuilt Mr. Diesel open filter kit with a delector from the fender scoop, in my 93, and it likely makes little performance difference, which some will argue, but if you like to hear your turbo (I do !!), it sounds very cool. Like most upgrades (?), all touches help both tecnically and mentally, in my powersports business, mental horsepower brings in $$$$$$ and customers.

No matter how much of a techie a diesel owner is, we all love to hear them run !!!! :D

My BHAF made a difference, there was a k&n in the stock airbox. Yes there is a cold air intake stock, but its pretty small. Unless you drill your airbox or put a bigger duct in, there is still cold air flowing up into an open air cleaner. I already had a governor spring and turned the pump up though, it probably makes a bigger difference on a modded truck vs a stock one.

Drag your cursor over the Discussion Forums link at the top, and from the drop down menu, select User Control Panel (red writing). Once in your UCP, on the left is a list of options, one of them being, Edit Signature. CLick on that, and fill in the blank with info about year, drive, transmission, cab, # of wheels, etc.
