I'm trying to find a 285/70/17 tire in an E load range that has an A/T tread. Not having much luck. I like the Toyo Open Country but it is a D load range. Any body running them?

I don't tow often so the "D" will probably work, but I have heard people talk about them being "squishy". I just don't want to make an expensive mistake on a tire.

Thanks, Randy

Randy, while your looking check out www.tire-easy.com They have some of the best prices out there!

I also see the Toyo open country A/T being offered in a 121 rating. I thought that would mean a E rating...

Randy, I don't know if you have Les Schwab in Texas or not but I just got some Toyo Open Country from them and they are "E" rated. $182. 00 each plus tax. 285 /70 /17.

I just put Procomp Extreme All Terrains on mine. They are one of the few E load range available. I went with size 305/65r17 and was somewhat disappointed that they aren't really any bigger than the stock 265/70r17 Rugged Trails, but they are almost 2 inches wider and the truck looks much better!

RStroede,

Are your new ProComps much louder? Are they wearing well? I'm looking to get some new tires and am having trouble finding some. Thanks.

Well, I just got them yesterday, so I'm not much help on those questions :D

I can hear them hum a bit at highway sounds, but certainly nothing like the Goodyear MT/R's on my Jeep (which are notoriously loud). Time will tell on wear and increased sound. They are a fairly aggressive tread pattern I'll snap a picture later and upload it.

If you look at the load capacity of a 285 "D" VS a 265 "E" they are "usually" the same or very close... . hence the the low number of "E" rated 285's... .

I have 285/70/17 BFG TA KO's on my truck... . they are far from "squishy"... they are inflated to 65 psi front and 55 psi rear-BJ

If I'm not mistaken, the 50,000 mile warranty and extreme weather rating is for the regular A/T, and doesn't apply to the Xtreme A/T's.

I just wore off a set of Toyo's from Schawb... they are only in the 4 or 5 western states..... The Toyo is not their high end tire... . and I didn't get the mileage I expected... . I would buy their high end road tire if it was available to fit my truck... . I have an 04 dually... . a different size..... I just bought the new Michelin at costco (6 tires)... with the rebate they have going... . it was the best deal... . I want to say around 180 a tire mounted and balanced..... and I think their nice to deal with... .

I have a set of Toyo AT's in load range D. I only have about 4,000 miles on them so far, but I am extremely happy with them. I pull about 11K off the hitch with no problems. They don't feel any "squishier" than the load range E Michelins that came on the truck. But they sure are much better on dirt and gravel than the Michelins. The ride quality is 110% better also.

Like jelag, I too am not getting the mileage I need out of my Toyo Open Countrys - I have the E-rated 285s. I'll be lucky to get 30 to 35K out of this set. For running around town some highway time and limited 5er towing, I'm going back to some BFG stock take-offs. The BFGs are slick as heck when wet but the life span is better. I had the Revo's on a 1/2 ton truck - they too didn't wear well.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in the Panhandle and we don't have Costco or Les Schawb.

I've read that the Revo's got noisy after a while, and thanks for the heads up on the low mileage expected.

The load rating system is confusing me. I thought there were just letter ratings, Now we have a number system? What numbers are considered an E load rating?

I'm can get a good deal on the Toyo's from a buddy of mine, but they have been on national backorder for 8 weeks. The Procomps are a good looking tire, but I'm trying to get a little taller tire.

Thanks Randy

Load range "E" is a 10 ply rating and has a load number of 121 in 265-70-17 size tires. If you go up a size to 285-70-17 the letter that most have is load range "D" which is a 8 ply rating but the load number is 121. The sales people say that the ratings on the 285's are the same because of the load range number of 121 even though one is a 8 ply(the 285) and one is a 10 ply(the 265). I decided to stay with the 265 for a couple of reasons--speedometer error and the cost to adjust it--having to buy a 5th tire for a spare so all tires were the same size--and the price difference. I originally bought the Goodyear Silent Armor but they couldn't balance them corrently so they had to replace them. (The Goodyears are now on Nation wide back order). I am relacing them with Bridgestone Revo's--based on the reviews and comments found on the Tire Rack. The rating syatem is explained on the Tire Rack web site if you need more info on the rating system tire manufactures use.

Just an FYI, since my Procomps ended up the same size (may slightly bigger) around the outside, they didn't affect the speedo, I checked it against my GPS. So, you might want to consider them also.
