Power Vision - where did you take off the DC?

Members,
I'm in the Navy and about to transfer from Denver to San Diego and wanting to run most of my woodworking tools up to my dad's place in Oregon. I'm looking to rent a small (at least 5X8) enclosed trailer to run from Denver to Salem OR and back. No more than 2000lbs cargo, mostly bulky stuff. Anyone have a trailer they could do without for a week? If you prefer not to post, I can also be reached at mike@mikenicki.com. I would prefer not to go more than about 2 hours from Denver for pick up. Thanks!

Don't know too much about small trailers but 2k lbs on a 5x8 will probably be over weight. You might try a tandem U HAUL on a daily rental, dont tell them you are taking it out of town, it's cheaper that way. Have made a few Abq - Tulsa - Abq runs in 2 days.

just a thought.

U-Haul is your best bet and probably cheapest in the long run. Cheaper than motor frieght costs I can assure you of that.

U-Haul doen't care how far you take a trailer when you rent it for local use. You just have to return it where you got it. I think they list their equipment on their web site. I think a 5x8 goes for about $15/day.

U-Haul is cheaper than some forms of transport, but if you don't need one way a local rental yard will give you a much better price, as much as 75% off U-Haul. I found that renting a one way trailer from U-Haul was more expensive than renting an enclosed truck for a round trip. It all depends on the supply and demand between the points that you are traveling.

1. A 5x8 should have at least a 3500 lb axle and will carry 2k just fine. I have carried much more than that in my 5x10 single axle.

2. I had to move my son's furniture back to Dallas from 29 Palms Marine Base. I was on vacation and thought I could find a 16' to rent but did not want U-Haul. I ended up buy ing a 20' cargo trailer (didn't need it - already had 3 at home), then sold it when I got home for more than I paid for it in Salt Lake City.
3. You can get a good used 5x8 or 5x10 enclosed for between $800 and $1200. Pick up a copy of Heavy Equipment Trader ( Auto Trader publication). They have a section at the back on used and new trailers for sale.
