Lately I've been getting more than usual start up smoke. Even at 80F ambiant air and only sitting 8 hours while at work. Lasts for about 30sec or so and clears up. Idle is somewhat rough but not bad during that.

Seems to have excess black smoke at engine operating temp under WOT from what I can tell in the mirror. Cleared out the muffler (no cat) then the normal puff under accel and then some extra at full boost.

At idle I can hear a occasional click it seems ever 15sec or so coming from the front driver fender well. Almost like a solenoid clicking on and off.

My initial thoughts are a leaky injector but now I'm thinking maybe a FCA? Sound familiar to anyone?

its almost at 122k and all stock. Have run 2 stroke oil in it ever since I got it at 43k. Milage has been the same the past month or so and no obvious smell of diesel in the oil or level rise.

thanks in advance for any insight!

Click could be the A/C compressor. Turn the inside fan off and then listen outside for the noise.

Smoke can be simple, start there, air filter restriction and then low fuel pressure, restricted fuel filters.

Recent basic maintenance? Could be a slight boost leak on the charge pipes.

Seems they all haze, it's just your verbal interperitation. Not a # like parts per million of particles.

Sounds like injector troubles to me. Best to get it checked out before it causes real engine damage.

Too many things go "click" under the hoods of these trucks... but I don't believe an FCA is one of them. If you're getting a fairly loud metallic rapping or tapping that comes and goes, that's typically an injector. Sometimes a good dose of injector cleaner will help that. If its a rhythmic clicking, then its something cycling on-off... and may even be a bad relay in the power distribution box under the hood.

If you're on the same tank of fuel, you may have simply gotten an off-spec tank of fuel... I see this all the time in my own truck.

All good advice. Black smoke=too much fuel and not enough air to burn it all. It could be caused by an injector or by the turbo. Id check all my air to air boots as well and make sure they are tight and dont have any holes or tears. Clean your air filter as well if you havent in a while.

Thanks guys, I was aware the AC compressor cycling on and off. Hell it gives me a jump everytime I have the hood up with it on.

I'm starting to lean towards injectors though. This morning it was 70º and it had some noticeable start up smoke, more than usual. I romped on it some the evening before and it black smoked more than usual as well. Was still making 30psi on my gauge though. Only one I have at the moment. It starts up normal, seems to idle ok with some rough spots and run normal. Does appear to be making oil though. Still kind of hard to distinguish a fuel smell though. I'll probably take sample soon to send as its got almost 8k on the oil now. Last sample 8k before showed no fuel.

However I filled up today and calc'd an increase in milage. So... . go figure.
