Hi All, My name is Greg and I am 15 years old and wanting a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 24 Valve Cummins Turbo diesel for a first truck in the next year. I am looking for suggestions and help on what to look for and some friendly places to purchase a Diesel.

Welcome to TDR. Just wondering, why are you specifically looking for a 2001? I owned a 2001 for a number of years and I absolutely loved it (probably my favorite of all of them that I have owned). But keep in mind, the same basic truck was available from 1998.5-2002. Be aware with the issues with the VP-44, lift pump, and 53 blocks on those 24-valves.

I dont really know exactly why I specificly want an '01 maby because that was the first one that I had ever rode in and the owner spoke highly about it. I also want to work on it and make repairs and improvements on it, which i know you can do on just about any truck, and I want to be a Diesel Mechanic in the Military and then as a civilian career.

I agree watch out for the 53 block. Do you want auto or manual shift. The 98.5 thru 2002 the auto has a 235 hp engine and the manual has a 245 hp. Try to find one with a fuel, boost and EGTgauge if possible the fuel pressure is the most important. The VP44 will die if pressure gets below 10lbs and is very costly to replace.

01+ is a wise choice. The late model 01s have four wheel disc brake w two piston calipers with rotors that slip off vs the old single piston rear drum brakes and the hub and rotor assembly of the older trucks which is not much fun to work on. If you can get a 6 spd they are HO models. Good luck. I love my 01. I am closing in on 30 and will have my truck til I die I think
