Howdy all,

I am looking for opinions on the various commercially available 4" exhaust systems. For example, differences in metals used in the pipes, thickness differences, do some/all of them include mufflers or if I choose to go muffler-less are the pipes long enough to do so, any other pros or cons. I'm certainly not interested in just going with the cheapest system out there, I don't mind paying a bit extra for the very best quality, as I intend to drive Godzilla for many, many long years.

So far, I know of systems from JRE, Bully Dog, Jardine and Banks. Any others?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
I have a Jardine 4" turbo back with the 30" Magnaflow that they supply. I am very pleased with it. The system bolted right on in about 2 hrs 15 min including cutting the tail pipe for the 5" Monster Tip (not supplied).

I can't give you any specs on the thickness of material. But it is a galvanized system and all bends in pipe are Mandrel bends. It really sounds AWESOME!

Tom,

One other idea you may want to consider is a custom exhaust system. I had a 4" system installed on my truck and I am very pleased with the results.

The shop removed the stock exhaust from just before the resonator. Then installed a Walker 4" muffler and a 4" tailpipe that turns out in FRONT of the rear tire.

Cost of this system installed on my truck was $250 including parts and labor.

I Just installed a BullyDog 4" exhaust 3 days ago. Sounds great more noticable turbo spool up. First tank of fuel hasn't been run through yet. I like this system because it was 14 ga. alumanized steel vs the thinner 16 ga found on others. (thought it may last longer. However for more than double the price Banks has a stainless system I'm sure performance will not vary from the Bullydog system. Install was a little tricky as they did not sent instructions or anything other than pipes clamps / hangers. After laying it out 10 minutes of examination made it self explanitory (probably the reason for not sending instructions) All stock hanger grommets are used with the new clamps. Fit is 90 - 95% perfect compared to stock. It took me 2. 5 hrs to install (incl removal of stock system). I've been riding w/ windows down w/ 20 degree temps just to better the tone!

I thought the Jardine was aluminized steel as well. Rust is not a big problem with the diesel like it is with a gas job.

I have the JRE exhaust system and have no problem recommending it. All bends are mandrel formed and it is aluminized steel also. I understand the price has been reduced recently and you can also get it without a muffler at even less cost. In any case it comes with enough pipe to eliminate the muffler (which I would recommend). The only problem is, the last hanger is not fastened to the pipe. You must either fashion your own (which is what I did) or take it somewhere to get it welded.

There is a description of the system and installation in the TDR product reviews section.

Tom,Banks sells a lifetime warranty free flowing muffler with stainless steel tailpipe that will fit your rig perfectly. Give them a call if you want the highest quality,it may cost more, but I found long ago that you get what you pay for.

I have a Diesel Dynamics 4" exhaust sitting in the bed of my truck. I have had it out and looked at it a couple of times and it appears to be a good system. If it was not so cold here it would be installed...

I have one of Teds systems and love it. Was wondering though how it would sound without the muffler. I have the 5" chrome tip which is very intimidating. Ted installed mine, looked easy enough would of like to do it myself but I can't weld. Hey radixr how does it sound?

The Jardine 4" exhaust system is constructed of aluminized steel (I saw one this past weekend... we didn't get around to installing it though). I can't comment on the muffler, as it was never removed from the box. I would suspect that it's also aluminized steel.

Myself, I have the Banks 4" diameter, mandrel bent, 100% stainless steel (turbo to tailpipe) exhaust system (including the straight through style Dynaflow muffler and polished 4. 5" diameter exhaust tip) ... AND LOVE IT! #ad

You DO NOT have to weld the Banks, JRE, Stan's Headers, or Jardine systems. I've seen two BD exhaust systems installed... they both required welding... this may or may not be the case now. I'm not sure about the other 4" exhaust systems out there.

groundpounder,

You will love the sound of a 4" mufflerless, catless system. I drive with the passenger side window (weather permitting) because it sounds so good. Try it, you will like it!

Roll cast...
when you had your custom system installed did you have to go to a specialty exhaust shop or do most have something like the four inch exhaust

Big Bob,your Jardine system, you say it sounds awesome. Is it louder than stock inside the cab, or just different tone?

FF1381,

The shop that installed my 4" custom exhaust dose most of the drag cars in my area. They can mandrel bend pipe up to 5". Take a trip to the local drag strip and ask the guys who run "Street Strip" setups who dose their exhaust systems.

VC,

I have the 30" Magnaflow muffler that came with the 4" Jardine system. It is a little louder in the cab but not unpleasant. When the turbo spools up you hear a very pleasant exhaust tone. I really like it. My wife has not complained at all about the sound, so it can't be too loud.

When I go on a long trip or if I have to work the engine alittle going up a hill, I keep hearing the wine from the turbo since I took the turbo ring out. I've thought about putting it back in, that is definately more annoying than the exhaust sound.

BIG BOB

Thanks for info. Do you know if there's a website for Jardine?
