I am looking into selling my Dodge Crew Cab and buying a 2nd Gen 3500 4X4 Quad Cab and adding two doors. What I need to know is what is better a 12V or 24V Cummins ? I intend to use it as a daily driver so fuel milage is VERY important. Also I will want to tow my 29' 5th wheel and 16' boat combo. I need to know which would be better suited for my use. So come on guys lets hear your 2 cent worth.

I have both a 12v and a 24v sitting in the driveway. The 24v is a better performer comparing stock vs stock... but reliability of both fuel systems is the difference. The 12v's fuel system if far more reliable and not sensitive like the 24v.

I would choose a 12V too, especially since you do not care about the quad doors. I had to have a quadcab, and could not find a 12V quad, so I have a 24. It was a big disappointment powerwise after driving a 12V that had been tuned well (cost $0). Dads 95 would STOMP my 99 stock to stock, both are auto's. The simplicity of the 12V has a TON of merit with me as well, but I have had no problems with the 24V electronics in 100K miles. A 12V with 3. 5 gears is going to do as well if not better than anything else for fuel economy, and with just a plate will tow your load quite well. I would not even consider a 24V in your position.

12V.....

all of the cummins guys that i do business with ( i own businesses in columbus indiana) steered me towards the 12V and away from the 24V...

the 12V pcm controls very few items... . and that's good.

The 12 v pcm doesnt control anything on the engine as far as the engine itself, only controls A/C, cruise control charging and stuff like that. Performance upgrades are cheaper, lift pumps last very well. cant reflash a 12V(thats good) and my personal dislike is there is no throttle linkage on 24V,its fly by wire.

I almost sold my 2001 to buy a 97 a while back. A guy I know very well was selling his 97 2500 clubcab 4x4 long box 5 speed with 70,000 miles. Truck is always garaged and was mint. The guy keeps all his stuff absolutely immaculate. It was a green and silver two tone, had 19. 5 wheels too. He sold it for $18,000 and bought a new 24 valve (not sure why).

Sure wish it was available when I bought mine... tried to talk him out of it then but he didn't want to sell it.

I really like my 2001 24 valve 6 speed but I like the fuel delivery on the 12's better and just like the idea of a more simple design. Oh well.

Deezul 1,

can't reflash a 12V??? the stealer just charged me $25 to reflash mine?

i guess that's why they call them the stealer!

Scott, about the only thing on a 12 valve that can be reflashed is the OD shift point on an auto. Ever get your problem figured out?

I still like my 12 valve

Mine was free but that sticker keeps coming off. They need to use a better adhesive. I guess at my next service I will tell them to put on a new one. Water got under this one and you can't hardly read it.

Can't the 24 valve be modified to the inline pump? I thought I saw where Piers was doing something on that order. Would that be the best of both worlds?
