My dad is in the market for a diesel. The dealer I brought mine from has an 01 coming in with 30,??? miles on it they are wanting $20,000 for it. It is fully loaded leather and everything the cummins is a non HO it's the standard hp. and the 47RE.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Should I look to see if it is a 53 block?

2. Should the test drive be something different. The 3rd gens have a highway vibe.

3. Is there anything else I should worry about? My 03 is the first diesel I have owned so I am new to this.

Thanks for all the help.

I do know where to look for the 53 block number.

With a flashlight you should be able to look at the area of the block just above the pan flange and below the power steering pump. Watch the front end compoinets while someone turns the wheel back and forth and check of worn tie rod ends, track bar etc. The jack up eack front wheel and left the wheel with the jack handle looking for play in the ball joints. Also rock the wheel up and down, and side to side by hand. Have the fuel pressure checked. If you bump the starter and see if you hear the lift pump run for 25 seconds.

If it has rear disc brakes, then it is a 2001. 5 or best of breed. Before others start yelling, 2002 lost the front CAD on most of them, along with rear fender liners, hood liner etc. And for some reason I see a lot of 2002 VP having problems. OK, I just knocked on my wood desk. SNOKING

That's sounds like a pretty good deal to me with only 30k on it. If everything checks out, go for it - especially if it's 4wd.

well I love my '01. with 75k I got the laramie with leather and the HO and every option except the rear disc. Highly recommended. Oh I paid 23k. baron
