Truck starting became difficult, then more difficult, then questionable...

And the truck was smoking today - kind of cool, but not normal.

Took it to the dealer today - all indications on the computer are normal except the fuel return rate. I was told this indicates that injector(s) are "leaking" internally. They kept the truck to cap off the injectors to try to isoloate the problem and figure out which one(s) are leaking.

Anyone else seen anything like this?

Any advice?

Well, it appears that I may be the only one one here with this problem. Oh well, I will post this anyway.

The dealer ended up replacing 2 injectors. Truck starts OK, but not like new. Then I went on another trip. I noticed a clattering sound under a load that gets worse as you put more load on it. This continued to worsen for about 2000 miles, but has now leveled out. Somewhere in Wyoming on level ground, pulling a large 5th wheel, I noticed a vibration, looked in the mirror and there was black smoke - then it would quit, did this on and off with no pattern for the 5000 miles and still does this - empty or loaded. The cruise has a hard time adjusting going down hills - unlike before. Now the truck smokes almost all the time - worse with throttle. Goes in the shop again tomarrow.

I hear that dodge will not let them replace more than 2 injectors at a time without approval, but I am going to try to get the other 4 replaced.

I love these trucks, but approval rating is falling fast. This was supposed to be an improvement over my 03 and was purchased to make a living. Now that I have to have it, and the mileage affects my income - I have problem and the worst mileage I have ever had out of the 5 cummins that I have owned - and spent the most money on options!

i think it might be time for a new engine... maybe its just me, but oil thinned by fuel is BAD. it will tear a bearing surface up FAST! push for a new truck or new engine. skip the injectors.

just personal opinion, and i am PICKY when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Update - Dealer said they called STAR to see what they said - STAR wanted them to replace the "fuel control solonoid" so they did - helped but no fix. BTW - I thought that you could only replace the whole pump, not just the soloniod? Anyway, they also wanted them to drop the tank - they did - not enough contamination to worry about. STAR wants them to cap off each injector again before they will allow injector replacement. Meanwhile, I am driving a Dakota with a V8 - 17 miles to the gallon and can't pull a trialer with it - junk!

I will give them another day, then start trying to go over their heads. Their service really is not that bad, but I need my truck to make a living.
