The Mercedes W5A580 automatic will be a plus for the Dodge/Jeep truck line. The coding is very clear: 5A is 5 speed automatic, 580 is the torque capacity in Newton-meters, which equates to 427 lb-ft. Perfect fir for the 5. 7 and 6. 1 Hemis. There is also a W5A800, which has been rumored to see use with the next V10. That torque capacity trabnslates to a whopping 590 lb-ft, more than adequate for any output the new V10 could throw at it. The next diesel will use the Allison 1000 (545 lb-ft rating), but unlike the Mercedes units, the Allison is designed for low-rpm diesel applications (making it true overkill with the GM 8. 1 V8).

Latest rumor about engines in the redesigned Ram is now this:
Ram 1500 - Detroit Diesel Delta V6
Ram 2500/3500 - Cummins B5. 9
Ram 4500 - Mercedes 6. 4

Just some info!!
The allison auto is supposed to be a reality for the 2003 diesel, which will be a CUMMINS. The 5. 7 HEMI is a REALITY, the 6. 1 is FANTASY. As for the MB transmissions, I also heard somthing about that, but I don't remember what vehicle they are going to be used in.
Also, the new ram will have a completely new chassis, as well as a new body. The crystal ball shows independant front suspension on the 1500 4x4 and stil a solid axle on the 2500 and 3500

Anyone have any more info on the MB transmission? I thought the Allison thing was just a rumor. The MB transmission sounds like a more logical choice, especially if they are going to the trouble of building this new multi-million dollar facility to build them.
