Loose Oil Filter

I noticed the other day that my truck was leaving a puddle of oil under itself every time I parked it. I thought that the oil pan gasket had blown but when I checked into it I found the Oil Filter loose. When I changed the oil last time I made the filter hand tight just like I do on every other vehicle I have every changed the oil on. Is this a problem with our trucks? And should I use a wrench to tighten it next time?

Make sure you don't have the old oil ring still on the mounting boss. That would contribute to a loose leaky filter. I have never had a hand tightened filter leak on a vehicle unless there was another problerm.



If you can't get it to stop leaking tightening by hand there is a problem you need to find. Tightening with a wrench could solve the problem or just cover it up. In addition you can destroy filters trying to loosen after they have been tightened with a wrench.

And should I use a wrench to tighten it next time?

I adopted this method several years ago to prevent a loose filter.

I first insure that the old o ring is not in the filter mount.

Then after tightening by hand I tighten another 1/2 turn or so with a strap type filter wrench.

I have never had a filter loosen up nor have I had an issue with removing a filter using this method.

Maybe I have wussy hands :-laf , but I never can seem to get the filter tight enough because my hands are usually too oily to get a good grip.

I had that happen one time on my 90. There was no obvious explanation. It was a very small leak, but surprised me nonetheless. I still don't tighten with a wrench, but rely on my Vise-Griplike hands!! :-laf
