The yoke on my rear diff has some side to side play, the U joint that is. I put on a new u-joint with new caps and still have some side to side play within the yoke. The truck has 190K and was used to pull a 35' 5th wheel before I got it. Is there a nifty way to fix this? I think I am getting some unwanted vibration at 65-70 mph because of this.

If there is side to side play in the u-joint you may have the wrong joint. The dimension for the fit in the yoke is very critical to have correct bearing load on the caps. If the old one was loose, maybe you need a new yoke.
What moves when you bump it? Just the shaft or the caps too?? Is the center cross tight in the caps??

The movement is side to side. There is about 1/16" play. When the new clamps were installed it seemed to hold however, there was play already there. The first joint they gace me was too small and I replaced it with one that seemed to fit correctly except for the side play. My concern is vibration as the shaft sits slightly offcenter in the yoke carrier. I've even concidered adding shims along the side of the caps to center the joint!

You shouldn't need to shim the caps into place. That yoke may need to be replaced and double check the U-Joint. I stuck with Spicer parts and haven't had any trouble yet.
