Oil out of cap after sock installed
OK, So I bought my 2001 a year and a half ago and the crankcase breather bottle had been deleted and a hose extension with a large plastic 90 degree elbow installed and zip tied to the sway bar. Before going on vacation two weeks ago I decided to zip-tie a sock over the end of the elbow at the end of the hose to catch any oil dripping out of the tube since I had just pulled the radiator and cleaned the oily filth from both sides along with a complete flush and fill. After a few days of driving I was checking under the hood and noticed oil all over the front half of the valve cover and determined it was coming from the oil filler cap. I HAVE NEVER HAD OIL LEAK AROUND THAT CAP EVER. EVER! My engine is very clean top side.
So I look down at the sock and see it is saturated with oil. I get this terrible feeling that the sock is NOT a good idea as it probably doesn't allow the tube to vent the gases to the atmosphere but instead has caused high enough crankcase pressure to force oil out past the cap's seal. I cut that sock off right then and there! Just ran out to check and after a week at least there is a little oil still seeping past the cap seal but nowhere near as much as after 2 days. I will get a new cap and report back but I have the terrible feeling about having plugged up the breather tube.
Anybody have any educated thoughts?
Thanks, Eric
