Hi

Coolant is seeping out of blockright behind the oil filter. 1994 12 valve. My mechanic calls it the block heater. He drove it back in and it held for a day and I want to replace it. My repair manual doesn't show the part. What do I call it? He also said he thinks I may be able to just put the "O" ring in. Whats your take?

Help the guy out.

Just make sure you are not a part of the #53 Club:(

I may be making a big deal out of nothing but the guy may not have any idea what a #53 block is. Wouldn't it be just as easy to tell waht to look for insted of some code?

I am not sure about all the facts, I don't have a 53 block, but the 53 blocks are made with thinner casting and sometimes crack. I do know that the #53 is casted on the side of the block in about 1" numbers. I think someone here will have you answer.

Hi:

This is a round fitting that is flat and has a hose or something coming out of it. The part seems to be pressed in. I do not have a "53" block.

You are looking at the block heater. The "hose" you see is the 110 volt ac cord. Probably rusted out. Think there is a screw to loosen for removal.

Yes there is an oil cooler in the block behind the oil filter. If it can leak externally I don't know but since it can be removed from the outside(externally) I quess it could leak externally.

The block heater coluld be leaking also.

Thanks for all replies. "o" ring was damaged. Hard to remove and replace for amateur 70 year old non mechanic. Not many parts available on weekend. Tried to replace w/ freeze plug . Wasn't quiet tight enough, blew out. Any secret to making plugs stay in. Really dont' need block heater in No. Cal. Thanks again.
