While driving last night, my CHECK GAUGES light came on everything was fine except the alternator started slowly dropping to zero. I pulled over and left it running. When I popped the hood, I got soaked with oil splatters, then I noticed that the whole underneath in the front end was covered, the underside of the hood, and now myself. I went to shut it off and noticed that I still had plenty of oil pressure. I cracked the throttle a few times and plenty of power, held her at 2500 and the pyro stayed below 300. I shut it off and the leak stopped. When running, it is as if you are slowly pouring oil on the front of the motor, that is how much is coming out. I ran it very easily home and left it as it was 11:30 pm and about 25 degrees. I do not think it it the head gasket b/c there is no water in the oil or oil in the water. , I do not think it is the front main, or the valve cover b/c they are not under a lot of pressure and surely with as much is coming out it would have to be something under pressure. Can someone get me started on where or what to look for? THanks in advance. I guess the plus side to this is now my underside has a rust preventer on it. LOL!

Have a look and see if the crankshaft seal has popped out. You might be able to clean it up dry along with it's seat and push it back in with some lock tite if it's not damaged.

You may have had a gasket blow out on the valve lifter/pushrod cover. This cover is located on the driver side of the engine, and runs the entire length of the block.

OH no, sounds like the Killer Dowel Pin strikes again. Your timing cover may have a hole in it.

Do a quick search on KDP, you are not going to be happy.

Wayne, a freind of mine blew the gasket you are talking about and had almost no leakage, but we could see vapor coimng from behind the pump.

I would check what Wayne suggests. This happened to a 98 I had on my way to work one morning. But it blew all my all out and they replaced the engine. Defect from the factory. I forget my mileage when this happened think it had 30000 something on it. My son told me about a contractor that was working for them and this happened to his 99. Something to look for on the drivers side. When I poured oil in mine it was running out on the ground.

Have you changed the oil filter lately? I know that this would be quite obvious but a member had his gasket on the oil filter blow out due to one sticking on engine when changing filter.

Ok I am going to do some checking today after the big meal. I have noticed no leaks at or around the filter or turbo, and it seems to be way worse underneath on the passenger side.

First check the dip stick for how much oil is still in pan , wash filter with solvent Or diesel dry with brakecleaner take a picture of filter before doing any thing like removing the filter. mark the position of filter to block take picture , remove filter and take picture of filter and gasket take picture of bottom of where filter screws on the eng. why see White nights posts on filter blown or pushed out rubber ring gasket . check filter and hose to turbo . If filter is in any way fault take pictures get witness and mark filter and have witness to mark show witness with filter . It could be a up hill fight if its a filter problem . Hope for best like loose filter ,requires clean and add oil LOL Ron in Louisville KY Ps picture is worth a thousand words . Ron.   :D

I personally wouldn't touch it if you're under warranty, you're likely to cause warranty denial problems, let the dealer figure out what's wrong.

Good stuff but??

Illflem, based on his profile I think he is his own warranty station, unless he has a good Dealer.

Now Guys don't yell at me that these additions did not cause his problem and that the dealer needs to prove that they did. I know that, it just seems like most dealers don't :(

YUP - the guys wanting to "challenge" the dealers with Magnussen-Moss better plan on taking along lots of $$$, an easy chair for a LOOooong wait, a couple of Philadelphia lawyers, some good magazines to read, roller skates for transportation while yer truck sits at the dealer's waiting for resolution, and.....

:p ;) :D

See the line below?

------------------------------

ABOVE that line, write EVERYONE ya know who has successfully challenged a dealer on warranty service - and BELOW that line, write everyone you know who was DENIED warranty service, and paid for it themselves - then see which list is longest... ;)

SOme food for thought..... I posted about a month ago about my lift pump going out and then it took the VP-44 along with it. Well I traveled to a dealer about 40 minutes from me and took it there after spending a few hours turning the motor back to stock, heck I even put the stock clamp back on the boost elbow. I also had a DRB chrystler scan tool to clear those boost codes. THe only thing they would have been able to find is the wire on the injection pump had been scotchlocked and another wire in the power harness. I hid them both well and it took them 2 weeks and throwing a lot of parts at it until 2 guys from Bosch came and looked at it then they replaced the VP-44 with a brand new one. Put everything back on the day I got her back except this time I used the new pump cover instead of scotchlock. I already have a appointment for next wednesday, but I am going to see if I can fix it before then unless it will be a lot of money or a lot of labor. Maybe I will have to put it back to stock again. Who knows? Whatever is letting oil out has to be under pressure I think I lost somewhere around 6-9 qts along a very very very easy 4 mile trip back home. It was Amsoil at that too ouch!. Like I said I haven't recently changed the filter, and there is just splatters around that area. It is definately coming from the front in the center or low passenger side of the motor. I was thinking maybe oil coller lines, or some kind of pressurized oil lines.

Hadn't heard about you getting the new VP44 - that's great, I know you were sorta baffled at the problem, as well as concerned at getting it fixed - glad it all worked out reasonably well - was any mention made by the Bosch guys as to improvements in the replacement pump?

motor oil or power steering fluid?

Here is some food for thought on this. On my 99 that I had with the V-10, I had a problem with the power steering going out on me. I thought it was the pump, but it ended up being a return line from the steering box to the ps cooler that was improperly routed from the factory. I would put pressure on the system and the line would come up and get cought by the fan blades. I don't know if you have ps problems, but I thought I would give something else to check.

Ben

No mention made about improvement to the pumps except on my end about the new pusher I was installing. Now I am worry free about FP with 20 constant psi.

Just a thought here from a first gen owner. Do the 24 valve engines have the turbo oil return line going back into the block below the oil filter? Sounds like the oil may be coming from this area.

Just a thought.

The area you describe sounds like the oil cooler, they usually leak into the coolant but I guess it could come outside the engine. It could be an over pressure condition caused the leak, you may have more of a problem than the leak itself.

I found my leak today... it was between the head bolts in the front of the motor. It is about a 3 inch gap. I lost about 6-7 qts over about 4 miles. It is now back into stock form and heading back to dodge on monday. If I had to do it myself it would be ported. studded, and o-ringed.
