Losing my login

Hey admin, I'm having a problem with the login. When I come into the forums and look at postings, all is fine. The site remembers that I was logged in already. If I click on classifieds, go there and look at adds and then click on discussion forum button to go back to the forums, I lose my login and have to go to the bottom and reenter name and password. Am I doing something wrong or is there a glich in the system? This is the way I have done this for a long time and have not had this problem before.

We haven't changed any settings that would drive this problem. Have you disabled cookies on your PC or made any other security-type changes?

This is a long term problem. This has been going on for a long time. I occasionally loose my log-in while reading a thread. Don't know why and have not noticed anything in particular that I do when that happens that is different than when it doesn't happen. No big deal because it's pretty quick to log back in, but it is surprising when I type a reply and it does not work because my log-in dropped before I finished typing.

Robin, don't you ever take a day off? I didn't expect to see any reply to this until tomorrow.



After posting the problem, I went back and did it again to see if it was consistent. Didn't do it this time. It could have been a cookie problem but like Joe said, sometimes when getting back on to the system the login will need to be done just because! Not a big deal, was just trying to figure out what was causing this to happen.

Just to add my . 02, it's been happening to me several times in the last 4 or 5 days also. Only once or twice a day... . not a big deal, just strange.

BTW, I haven't changed any settings here.

It just did it again! I logged on the computer, went to the TDR site and was still logged on, didn't have to logon again. Looked at the forums then clicked on classifieds. Did a search for the past day, looked at an add. I went back to the top bar to click back on the forums and noticed that "discussion forums" was not highlighted in red. When I clicked on it, went back to forums but was not logged in anymore. Last night when it was working ok, the "discussion forum" was highlighted in red and didn't lose login when going back and forth.

Mine does the same thing too. Usually it happens when I only have 1 or 2 forums left to check out. It seems that it happens after being on here for a certain amount of time but I don't know. Anyway, it isn't a big deal, just have to log back on and continue.

I just lost my login like the others.

The first time I was on this site was about an hour ago with no problems.

This time I had to login as if I wasn't cookied.

Welp, I went through and navigated just like you guys did and I had no problem. I also looked at the cookies that TDR's server was sending me and all seemed normal. The only cookies the server is trying to send the user when going to the classifieds is the banner cookies. When coming to the forums, your user and password cookies are also sent. Now if there was an old link in the classified area that pointed to the old forums, or a url that doesn't match where the cookie is supposed to come from, then you can have a problem and the session might be cleared, which would kick you out.



Also, if you had an old page in classifieds cached and it was pointing to the wrong link, then you can also have the kick out problem.



Finally, I did notice that the TDR is sending out the same cookie names as other vbulletin sites. This can also cause a problem and each site should specifiy their own unique cookie name.



I don't know what browsers you're using, but you can start by clearing your browser cache and clearing all of your cookies. Then come back to the site and try again. I'm using IE 6. 0. I know older versions of Netscape have problems with forums like this. If you're running 4. 78 or lower, upgrade. That will help not only with login problems, but functionality too. Also make sure your browser security level is low enough to allow all cookies from this site.

It's unpredictable. Sometimes I can do anything I want and no problem. Then just doing ordinary things I loose my log in. I've had it do it with IE on my work machine (latest everything) and on NS (v4. 78) on my home machine. I don't think it's something to spend a lot of time looking for. The only really aggravating thing is when it does it after I have typed a response or a PM. It did that last week on this work machine. IE and Windows 2000 Professional version etc etc etc.

I would recommend setting your browser to prompt you for cookies, then come back and go through to see if you can duplicate the problem. When you're prompted, make sure you allow it to accept the cookie. Note each cookie you get, then when it breaks, you can jot down the last cookie that it sent you and give that to the admins. That might help pinpoint where the problem is. If you don't see any problems at all, then your cookie settings might need to be changed to allow all cookies, including 3rd party cookies. Just make sure you clear all cookies and your entire cache before going through this process. That way, everything is new.

I'll see if I can do something with that. One interesting thing is that this machine replaced the old piece of junk I was using just a few days ago. Clean hard disk. The computer techie formated it and installed the software packages. No old trash at all. The problem is a very seldom thing so I don't think a lot of effort should be devoted to solving it. My post above was to alert admin that it's not just old browsers on messy machines. The paint is hardly dry on this one.

I rarely have to relog on but sometimes have a problem that is almost similar. Sometimes the unread icon next to the posts will default like I've just logged out then back in, all are shown as read. This especially happens when a PM comes in and I open it a new window, when I return the icons are reset. Must be a time limit type thing.

Steve and I have reviewed all system settings, and we cannot find anything on our end that is causing this problem.



Several thoughts/suggestions have been presented, and we support everything that has been posted.



When troubleshooting, here are the things we would do:



First Manually clear your cookies. Here are the instructions for Internet Explorer 5 on Windows:



Close all Internet Explorer windows.



Click the "Start" button.



Move up to "Find" and click "Files or Folders" from the menu that appears.



In the new window that appears, in the "containing text" field, type in the domain name of the board without the "http://" or "www." part. You will need to do this twice - once for each of the following:



- 216. 235. 147. 117

- 128. 242. 249. 86



In the "look in" box, type in "C:\Windows\Cookies\" (without the quotes) and press "Find Now"



After it has finished searching, highlight all files (click a file, then press CRTL+A) and delete them (press the "delete" key or SHIFT+DEL



Your cookies should now be removed. You may want to restart the computer and revisit the board to be sure.



Second, and this is more of a note, your browser probably has a limit on the number of cookies it can accept/store. Perhaps you have hit the maximum allowed, and the oldest cookies are being cleared. This would require you to have to log back in and could explain the intermittant nature of the problem.



Third, perhaps firewalls and internet security software is contributing to the problem. Be sure your software is allowing you to accept cookies from https://www.turbodieselregister.com. The only cookies we set include username, password, and date last visited.



We'll keep looking for answers on our end. If anyone else has any other ideas, please post them.
