Sound like a bad vacuum leak or vacuum pump to me. It's on my sisters 94 4x4 CTD. The other day she said that the brakes felt like they got alot harder to press and the 4x4 won't work anymore. If it does turn out to be the pump (after checking all vacuum lines) is it easy to replace? Thanks

Jeff

The pump is pretty easy to remove from the truck. Rebuild kits are available from: Precision Equipment 800-325-2690. The kit for my 96 was PN 9141K. I only needed a new oil seal and contacted CPFF for his seal kit. One last thing, I'v been having a difficult time getting the 4X4 to engage as a result of oil in the lines. The front axle would have a delayed engagement/disengagement and bang pretty hard when switching from 4X4 to 2X4. The result of the banging (I believe) was a blown up 241HD transfer case.

I never had had a problem with my 4x4 in my 95. When it goes from 4wd to 2wd there is no noise but i engages and disengages every time. What makes the fromt axle lock? I know the hubs are always locked and in 2wd the driveshaft spins freely. Is it in the diff?

You should have a center axle disconnect unit on the front axle toward the passengers side of the truck. It consists of a fork and slip joint to lock the front axle via a vacuum motor when the transfer case is put in 4X4. A switch on top of the transfer case is actuated by an internal pad and thus allows vacuum to goto the (I think) outboard side of the motor locking the front axle. Newer trucks don't have this anymore, they just keep the front end fully engaged - not sure what year.
