Pertinent Facts: 98. 5 Dodge Diesel 2500, 24 valve, 5spd, 140K miles

When de-accelerating, sometimes engine rpm's drop to idle speed & throttle is unresponsive and engine light comes on. Typical situtation..... climbing a hill & on the downside after I let off the accelerator, I cannot get the engine to respond. If I go in on the clutch, I notice that the RPM drop to idle speed. The engine does not die. Within 5-10 seconds, the engine starts to respond.

Fuel filter was changed about 10K mile earlier but did not help symptoms.

I've also experimented w/the cruise control & if I hit resume when I experience the power loss, the throttle goes to floor to no avail.

No problems with accelerating...

my guess

I would guess the throttle pos sensor, now called accelerator pedal sensor, is the culprit. I had this happen only once so far, but your symtoms certainly sound the same. Earlier versions could be cleaned, but I don't think the new one can.

I tried all the various means of reseting the codes to no avail (disconect the batteries for a while, unplug harness on the firewall, let AutoZone try resetting it etc) and ended up purchasing cables and software for my laptop (OBDII compatible) which took care of it.

Mine does that only on long steep downhills. No throttle response just lots of blue/grey smoke. Runs great otherwise. I have several codes including 0216 which is injection pump timing failure. DC is going to replace my injection pump on tuesday. First time I took it in service writer said it was the pump, the mechanic said it was the pump, the codes point to the pump but DC would not authorize the replacement. This was a friday and SW said he would see me on monday because he was sure the code would come back. Within 45 minutes after leaving (on my way out of town) it did it again and reset the codes. When I got back home after a long ride home of "is this thing going to make it" becaue it got worse and was taking longer for it to snap out of it. On monday the service writer said gee let me guess what happened. They pulled the codes again and said no problem would order pump. Goes in tommorrow for a new pump.
