Loss of power do to a black sludge buildup.

It was thick enough to scrap off and looks like engine soot.

I changed the filter 6 month ago and use fuel additive.

Running mobil ULSD fuel

It is alge in your tank that the ULSD has been kind enough to loosen and send through your system. Keep a filter behind your seat at all times to be safe. It could plug the new filter tomarrow.

Algae is usually pretty slimy. Was it like that or was it more like hardened dirt and not slimy?

If you have algae, all marine stores carry biocide. If you put that in for a few tanks, it will kill it all. Just keep in mind that all of the algae will end up in your filter so you will have to do a couple of filter changes. Even if you don't have algae in the tank, adding biocide isn't a bad idea every now and then, especially if the truck sits a lot.
