My in-laws have 2001 2500 that is stock. It just started acting up today while pulling a flatbed trailer with a jeep on it.

Apparently they lose power while driving. Then when the transmission down shifts they get the power back and it is OK for a while. This started this morning with a cold engine.

They already had the fuel lifter pump replaced last year. This may be a transmission problem? Do not about any trouble codes.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I agree that the fuel filter should be changed again just to rule it out, but also the fuel pressure should be checked at the fuel injection pump inlet.

Also, if the transmission overheats it will downshift out of overdrive until it reaches a safe temp.

Best regards,

John L.

Thanks for the responses. Hopefully will hear something this evening, in-laws were taking the truck in today before they come home from AZ.

Got a call from my in-laws they said the dealer told them it was lift pump and something in the transmission.
Their solution was to buy a new 1500 4X4.
Problem solved.
