Father has a 01 cummins w/5spd. Hauled a load of cows about 150 miles

north, no problems. On the way home loss of power, gives it gas and says it feels like it's stalling out. Thought it was the fuel filter changed it out but didn't work. Any idea's?

Hayseed,

The first thing to do is verify adequate fuel pressure is present at the fuel inlet to the Bosch VP44 fuel injection pump. You can do this by using a fuel pressure test set. Ideally the fuel pressure should be about 15psi or greater at idle and never drop below 5 psi under full throttle.

If the fuel pressure isn't adequate, then that usually means the lift pump (located on the side of the engine) is bad. This of course assumes the fuel filter isn't clogged.

If the fuel pressure is fine, then the VP44 fuel injection pump may be culprit and in need of replacement.

How many miles on this truck?

Has the VP44 ever been replaced?

Please keep us posted,

John L.
