I'm posting this for a friend who has a 99 CTD/auto/4WD. He was rescuing a dead Caravan over the weekend when he had a sudden loss of power. Running down the interstate at 65mph with the Caravan in tow, his tach and speedo suddenly started going down for no apparent reason. Truck didn't cut off but he just lost power. He was able to make it the 100 miles or so home. When pressing the accelerator, it seems to have certain spots where it gets power and he can push the accelerator a little more and it starts to cut out. The truck is not smoking excessively or showing any other bad signs, it just looses power. What do you think guys?

Yup that is what is sounds like to me too..... there is a recalibration procedure that helps sometimes (you can do it yourself), but most likley it going to get worse sooner or later. Some members have cleaned them and it has helped too.

To re cal the apps disconnect the bats for a couple of hours. Hook them back up and turn the truck to the run position but do not start. Gently push the peddle to the floor and let it up. Then cycle the key off and then back on and start it. It has helped a few people I know of.

I had a loss of power on my 99 when it got to operating temperature. It sounds like the same symptoms that I had. Mine turned out to be a faulty Map sensor. You can get it from Cummins. I can get the part number for you.

1999's have lift pumps? Because this is what exactly happen to me and it was the lift pump that failed. Check the fuel pressure.
