Have a 2001 HO six speed which has lost power and now blowing black smoke out exhaust. Have 73k miles. While under power the truck suddenly lost power and started blowing black smoke. I have a std truck except for a exhaust brake. Cannot get over 30 mph. HELP!!!!

Quick check: Take a good gander at your intercooler piping, and make sure that the clamps are tight, boots are not compromised, and that the elbow off the turbo is not cocked or misaligned. Sounds dumb, but boost leaks are notorious for low power and black smoke. Is it running rough, like missing? Can you check your waste gate for proper operation? If the wastegate is some how stuck open, black smoke could result. However, not being able to get over 30 MPH is indicative of other issues, like fuel pressure, and you should really check them if you can. If I can remember right, 15psi priming, no less then 9-10 under load to be good. You can also remove the top of your fuel filter housing, remove the filter itself, and take a look at what might have accumultated in the sump. Hopefully nothing, but if your lift pumps is going internally, you might see/be able to fish out with a magnet: metal from the pump. There are plently of people on here that can help, and as always, it might be something simple. I hope this gets you started.

P. S. To all the other diesel heads: I hope I haven't missed any gross items that would cause this, because if I have I know I'll hear about it :D :D :D

Intercooler connect hose. Sudden loss of power and lotsa soot = No air = no boost via most common connect hose or lunched turbo.

ALSO Being an '01 dbl check the lower drivers side intercooler hose as it has been known to rub and tear open hoses from the sheetmetal that rides WAAAY too close. Mine was torn.
