I have my grandfather to thank for getting me hooked on Dodge Diesel. He now needs some help,so I am at the place of the experts. He drives a '96 2500 4wd. He has the 4' straight exhaust and gauges. For the past several months the truck lacks power under heavy loads and hard acceleration. Filters are good and clean. He did get some bad fuel. Could he have damaged fuel injection or pump, or could it be something else? Thanks.

Assuming the fuel filter is clean, and the screen in the fuel bowl is clean.
I would first check that you are getting "FULL" throttle travel at the pump, with the accelerator on the floor.
Second look for a break in one of the air tubes between the turbo and the intake manifold.
Third check the fuel pressure, if low close of the return line and see if it goes up where it should be, if so the check valve is probably be bad. If no change, it could be the lift pump or a line suckng air.
Does it start ok after sitting a while?
Good Luck,
Randy

That really bites when you have Tremendous Power and then suddenly lose it. If it happens to come by here I will be sure and let you know. I may even try and round it up and return it to you, but don't get your hopes up #ad

Hi Gibson
You might want to check to air fuel control line for breakage or if you have ever had the grid heaters stick on it usually melts that little plastic line. You would have decent low end power but as soon as you get on it you dont get the extra fuel under boost,,would make the thing ungoddly slow.
It is located just behind the fuel injection pump on the AFC housing,,small 1/8" line with a small brass fitting on each end,,it usally connects on the head near by... only a 12. 00 part,,,but a little hard to get a wrench in there.
Hope it helps,,and feel free to e-mail me for details.
Good luck

I had a friend with the same problem. He got pi$$ poor power while pulling a load. It turned out that it was his overflow valve. After he fixed it, it was the same truck again.

I had my overflow valve replaced under warrenty a few months ago. However, when mine wnt bad I lost power at all rpm and throttle settings, not just at high rpm or when on it hard. Had to slip the clutch more to get rolling.

I had the same thing happen to my 97 3500 4X4. It seemed like over night the engine lost most of its power, cruise control could not hold 70 MPH up a decent grade (UNLOADED)!!! The cuplrit turned out to be the AFC Sensing line. This is a plastic hose pipe about 10 inches long, which runs from the intake manifold just under the grid heaters to the AFC valve housing. Mine had melted about an inch from the intake manifold side. This pipe is very important. I'm not sure exactly what it does, but I have read it is used to sense the amount of turbo boost the engine is generating. I replaced mine with a braided hose to prevent it from melting again.

I had the same thing happen to my 97 3500 4X4. It seemed like over night the engine lost most of its power. The cuplrit turned out to be the diaphram in the turbo waste gate acctuator. I checked it by disconecting the pressure hose at the AFC valve and attaching an air hose to it with about 20 psi and checking for leaks down the line and at the acctuator.

Good Luck,

GE

PS, I had 80K on mine and my dealer fixed it under engine waranty.

You might want to check fuel pressure. You might have a transfer pump problem. When you would hit the throtle,it would not respond very well. I replaced it, it did not act the same. I bought my truck used and it had this problem already. It has more spunk than before. It felt at 1900 to 2000 rpm that it was starving for fuel. Steve Fyfe

Do a search with my user name and look at "overflow/cheap easy fix" 15 minutes and no money took care of mine when it wouldnt pull the rv much over 60mph and it happened almost over night.
