Both times right from start-up, I put it in drive and it was automatically in

2nd. When I turned the truck off and started it again, both times I got 1st back.

Do the governor transistor or solenoid just start to go bad? What do I do?

thanks,

Pretty sure the solenoid is dirty and stuck. Some have been able to take it apart and clean it. My boy tried, put it back together and it jammed again in a day or two. He said it wasn't worth it to him, he bought me a new one.

He also installed an inline oil filter in the return line to the transmission. No more bad solenoids now.

My truck would start out in 3rd gear. As you said, if you shifted it to low, you could get it to go in 1st or 2nd, I don't remember which now.

Try replacing the transmission output speed sensor. It's cheaper and easier than the parts inside the transmission. My truck wouldn't shift out of 1st sometimes and I replaced the gov solenoid and pressure solenoid inside the trans. and it still did it. TDR member advised replacing the speed sensor and it shifted perfectly

again (good ole TDR). May not be your problem but worth a try first. I learned the hard way. LOL
