Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) lost 3rd & 4th gear?

new built trans 3 mo old and new SBC clutch 4 mo old: now after nailing hard in 3rd heard loud clunk like a UV joint braking and that was not the case but I now have no 3rd or 4th gear what you think is gone bad hear. . ? I have never heard of such.

You twisted the output shaft off under Third gear. Not uncommon for the NV4500. Theres a snap ring groove there and it the weakest spot on the Rear Main shaft.

The only Mod I know of is DON'T SNAP the drivetrain. What I mean is don't let up on the go pedal to the point where you go to compression and then snap the pedal to the floor. Those who have done this, SOME will admit this is what they did.

don't make sense to me why 1st 2nd and 5th as well as reverse works good still?

On the 5-speeds 3rd and 4th gear is up front, not in back. It locks the input shaft w/ the mainshaft for 4th gear 1:1 ratio. My guess would be you stripped the splines on the sliding collar that meshes the gears together, that's why you don't have 3rd or 4th. Pull the transmission and pull the top cover, you should be able to see it right where the input shaft comes in and meets w/ the mainshaft. If that's all it is, that is a fairly easy fix once you get the transmission out. Best case is some synchros and maybe an input shaft, worst case is you broke the splines on the mainshaft, which means complete tear down to replace the mainshaft.

This is what happened to mine after Many and i do mean Many of repeated nailing it in third. I don't speed shift, i roll in the throttle to get the turbo up around 10 and nail it. I don't tow with it, and it's even got an open rear so i never thought the trans would break. Third gear is the wimpyist gear in there. 3rd on countershaft is almost an 1/8 narrower then 3rd gear on the mainshaft. See in the pic. that the C. S. has teeth gone and other gear is just chipped. I just bought the parts from standard transmission and i asked the same question. How much does and upgraded cluster cost? He said there is NONE,just the same wimpy 3rd.

Wish I had pics but the guy just called and He said nevver seen that happen before! broke shaft clean into like a saw cut it and messed up other stuff in there too... He He good thing was under warenty from only been in truck for about 3 mo. must have been defective part!
