yesterday got into some loose gravel went for the 4 wheel drive and no response. there was no noise. also no indicator light. fluid levels are ok. does anyone have any advice on how diagnose this problem?
Sounds to me like the vacuum actuated shift motor didn't slide the collar over inside the right side of the axle tube. Check your vacuum lines and vacuum pump for problems.
Blackcloud solution is right. Check the vacuum line at the three way connector by the brake master cylinder and follow down to transfer case then to the front axle.
I believe you can tell if shift fork has moved by putting in 4wd and looking under front axle (make sure brake is on and in park/neutral). You can do this after you check for bad connections and leaks.
Every one that I've repaired with no 4wd has been caused by the vacuum hose cracking right where it connects to the 4wd shift collar on the pass side front axle. Fix is easy, just cut the bad part off and push the good back on.
