Archived lost 5th gear

I have a 1996 Dodge diesel powered 350 truck with 5 speed manual transmission. I pull a 35' 5th wheel. I have lost 5th gear twice while pulling. Fifth gear is currently gone and I am wondering if I need to fix it or can I just use 4th gear for the rest of my trip. I am going to put on about 4000 more miles.

When that fifth gear nut falls off it takes some of the threds off too and they are floating around in there ... . cant be good! I drove my truck without fifth for about a week or so til I got a main shaft replacement sent to me from standard trans in texas. When I took the trans apart it looked ok but there was metal in there.



I think you would be ok but 4000mi w/o fifth is slow going.



You said you lost it twice while towing??? I never heard of it going back on by itself . When my nut fell off I shifted from 4th to nga (not going anywhere) then back to 4th . no noise no nothing no 5th gear.

Depending on the miles on the trans and the damage done so far, you might consider a reman from Standard Transmission. I'm guessing that the first two times it was repaired, a new nut was installed and not much else.



Standard Trans has a fully splined shaft which keeps the gear from working the nut loose. It can be installed in your trans or you can have the whole unit swapped.



I'm thinking if you are on the road (without a real tight time line), you could get it installed locally either where you are now or on the road to another place. They should be able to suggest an installer. I tried searching for a website for them but it didn't pop up at me, can someone else post it?
