1995 bone stock with 84,000 miles. Replaced 5th gear a year ago.

After driving about 200 miles today I started to leave a parking lot, but the shift lever would not go in reverse. No noise no hard shifting, no nothing. The shifter would go over there but just would not engage. Headed home and tried to shift up to 5th and the same thing happened. Drove home in 4th and tried to shift reverse and 5th several times but it will not go up or down to engage. I have a service manual that covers the transmission but am unable to tell if it's in the cover or transmission. Can I take the cover off without pulling the transmission? Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks, Tom/Idaho

It would not be easy. Clearance becomes an issue. There was not enough room when I tried that on my 95 Ram 4x4. The shift forks are the problem. If you cut the trans tunnel, then there would be lots of room.
