Having power boost problem or fuel problem. 2001 5. 9L 24 valve cummins.

Changed fuel filter and problem still there. At 40-55 mph truck will loose power. Press pedal to floor no response. Clutch the girl hit accelerator and power comes back. I get no indicator lights. Got 67000 miles on it. Concerned to take to dealer, found that most don't have good diesel mechanic. Need some good information to ask.

Thanks,

David

Crank position sensor maybe? Sounds like the engine is running in limp mode. Watch the tach and see if it bounces then drops to zero while driving. If there is no check engine light then SRadke is probably right. In any event its time you got some gauges and start filling up your signature with aftermarket stuff. :D ... . Good luck, Jim

Try resetting the APPS. Pull the neg. battery cables, let sit for 10 min, reconnect batteries, turn ignition to on (do not start), press accelerator slowly down and release slowly. Test drive.

Your MAP may also be bad. You will need to drive with an ODBII hooked up to test this.

OH! Welcome to the site. :) Mike

Do you have a standard or auto ? Sounds to me as if might be APPS. I have recently found that cycling the key 3 times turn the key to start but leave the clutch out or suppose in D for auto slowly depress pedel and let up turn to off and repeat 2 more times and leave the key off for over a minute and start normally. Hope this helps.

99 24v 5spd 3500 junk!

The lift pumps are notoriously poor on the 24 valve trucks. 60-80K miles is their average life, many less. When they go sometimes the truck will still run with few ill symptoms so you'll continue driving it all the while starving your injection pump of fuel due to a failed lift pump. The injection pump (VP44) relies on that fuel from the LP to lubricate and cool it so if it's run with a bad LP it's life is greatly shortened. Many die 5-10k miles after the LP is replaced. I don't mean to scare you but it is common and VP44 aren't cheap. Hopefully you can find your solution in the APPS or elsewhere.

Scott,

Thanks for all the info. I had a terrible time finding a Dodge dealer who had a certified tech to work on Cummins engines. I ended up calling Dodge to get a dealer. I didn't want any non diesel tech looking at my truck. I'll give you an up date tomorrow after the appointment. I've been running a lube conditioner in my fuel since I left Ohio.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. Have an appointment at a dealer tomorrow. I'll see what codes they come up with.

David

Mike,

Only code that came up was the timing of the injector pump. Dealer said to set up an appt. to check LP flow and injector pump. Dodge wont release either pump without failed readings. Keep you posted.

I'm taking my truck in tomorrow for diagnosis of a possible Transfer Pump and/or Injector Pump issue. Would like to know what my options are.

Q1) Is what I'm hearing about weak Cummins Injector Pumps the experience of others? Does a downstream fuel pressure or flow problem take out the Injector Pump very quickly?

Q2) Is Dodge or Cummins covering Injector Pumps on Cummins 24-Valves that are out of the original 5 year/100,000 mile warranty but low miles (66K in this case)? Who can owners call to explore getting Dodge to cover this? This could be a possible $3,000 repair on a low mileage 7 year old Dodge/Cummins 24-Valve!

Q3) What less expensive options are there?

1998. 5 Dodge 2500 QuadCab

24-Valve Cummins 5. 9 L

66,000 miles

My Engine Check light just came on 3 days ago. Dealer read out code today as "injector pump timing failure". Technician says he will check Tranfer Pump (AKA lift pump?) first to check for fuel flow and pressure. He also says that 90+% of the time a downstream problem with the Transfer Pump or Fuel Filter damages the Injector Pump in short order.

Possible costs:

1) Transfer Pump $450 parts + labor

2) Clogged Fuel Filter about $150 parts/labor

3) Injector Pump (remanufactured) $2,000 + $200 to $400 labor
