I just lost 5th gear @ 117000 miles on the clock. I am thinking about replacing it with a new 6 speed and a heavy duty clutch and flywheel. I have already shorten the driveshaft once by installing a gear vendor. Can I shorten the front half more to acomadate the new 6 speed or do I need to install a single shaft instead of a two piece shaft? Where can I find a place where I can get all the parts to change from the five speed to the 6 speed including cross member if needed and flywheel and clutch assembly? I don't think I want to invest into this 5 speed just to have it come back apart again later down the road. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

lost 3 before I got fully splined shaft from Standard trans & Gear 1-800-783-8726.

Been fine since. 40' 5th wheel... took me three tries before I did it, don't wait... J Dodge

Dallas,

I also looked at the 6spd option when I needed bearings in my nv4500. I think you can find a new 5600 for about $3500 plus another $1000 for crossmember, clutch shaft etc. I decided I'd have over $5000 in the whole thing by the time I got done.

I shipped mine to standard transmission where new bearings, several synchros, a fully splined mainshaft, 5th gear, nut etc camb to about $1000.

It works well now.

I just lost 5th for the 4th time, 25K miles ago I had it rebuilt with the fully splined shaft "supposedly". I'm going to a 6 spd, I'm done with that POS NV4500! Rog, I thought like you last time, dumped 2200 bucks into the rebuild, now that 5K is looking pretty cheap, I get to spend it anyway.

I hope you're OK, I'm not real sure I got the fully splined shaft yet either. I probably got the shaft, just not the fully splined one, LOL. I'll let ya know, probably be a week before I tear into it.
