You may want to do a test on your gauges... To do this, hold down the trip meter reset button, and turn the key to the on position. Hold the button down, then it will go through a self-diagnostic proceedure. It will test everything, including all the lights, meters, and alarms.

Do this to rule out a problem with the instrument cluster... If all checks out ok, wait a week or so before calling DC to see if it happens again. #ad

Another possibility: (I learned when taking mine out). With the screws removed, the instrument cluster on your 99 just pops out -- not much force required to connect the plugs in back.

There are two plug harnesses (upper left and upper right). If it keeps acting like a short you could remove the bezel, clear plastic cover, and spacer ring. Take out the instrument cluster screws and see how hard you have to pull to get those two plugs to let go. I removed mine with only a thumb and index finger on each side -- pretty much just fell out.

I don't have a shorting problem, but it didn't seem to me the connections were all that secure.

Speaking about gauges.....

Has anyone noticed that the black background piece on their main gauge pod is NOT flat? I noticed it today on the way home. The sun was at a perfect angle and I could see pretty severe ripples in the black background.

I'm wondering if this is causing some of the 'sticking' gauges on our newer trucks. It just appears as though the adhesive they are using was applied improperly (meaning there is not a continuous layer of adhesive) and where they missed, it is 'lifting'.

I had this same problem on one of my 'Bikes. I had to disassemble the bike gauge and put down a layer of clear silicone adhesive, re-apply the background piece and used a rolling pin to work ALL the bubbles out. Maybe I'll have to 'fix' my truck too. #ad
