Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Lost power = Fuel Selenoid?

Last week-end after a few hundred miles of slush and salt I turned the key off and the engine kept running. Gotta love those diesels :)

So I pushed the thingamajig back to shut it off. Fuelled up and left but then I lost power for the next leg of the trip. Couldn't get boost, dropping down to 3rd on small hills and all I was pulling was a 12' enclosed trailer with maybe 1000 lbs in it and another 500 in the bed. :(

So now the shut down is on and off and looks like the selenoid or the linkage is jamming but I'm more worried about the loss in power tho it seems to run good now.

Is it possible that the selenoid did not open the injection pump 100%. Can it run part way open?

I'll bet if you check your solenoid out the boot is rotted out and it's all gunked up. Remove it to clean but be careful parts don't fly or you'll be shelling out $200 for a new one. If the boot is rotted a short length of bicycle innertube and some tie wire or cable ties works just fine.
 
It is very possible for the shut down seloniod to casue low power I have seen it several times (medium duty) cummins came out with a bigger body seloniod to correct it. If you can push on the shut down linkage while the truck is running and it moves it is bad some times you can even push far enough to kill engine.

At first I thought bad fuel for the loss of power cause I had just filled up and was about 10 mikles down the hignway when it first happened.

So if that selenoid is sticking, then it's very possible the plunger never got to go all the way up, so with a partial open, it cut some of the fuel supply to the Injection Pump. Has to be it.



I did try to shut it down while running and I couldn't move the plunger.



Anything else I should do while I got that selenoid out?
