I just bought a '97 Dodge automatic 4x4 with a Banks exhaust system already on it and I'm having some real problems with the pick up from low speeds. Going from a stop or low speed, trying to speed up, especially up a hill it bogs down and I have to get the peddle almost to the floor before it gets past the problem area and begins to pick up speed. Once it picks up a little speed it's great, but it really bogs down at the start. I took the truck to a diesel mechanic and he put a rebuilt turbo into it, saying that my turbo was dead and not set up to work with the rest of my banks system, and that his turbo would solve the problem. Well, $850 later the problem isn't any better! I'm afraid to drive it for fear of making things worse, and I don't know if the turbo was even part of the problem or if I'm being taken for a ride. Has anyone had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin:confused:

Check to make sure your the line to the AFC housing is Ok.

Hopefully it is not a trans problem (torque convertor).

Is it shifting?

You can try adjusting the AFC wheel, give it more fuel at low end. As I recall you turn wheel toward engine /firewall.

Thanks. It does seem to be shifting allright otherwise, but I'll definitely check out the AFC, and the line going to it. Thanks for the advice.

With my AFC housing not full forward, my truck acts the same way. Try loosening the screws on the AFC housing and tapping it full forward toward the radiator. Makes a big difference in takeoff.

O. K. What IS the AFC housing and the line to it? Where do I find it? Is it in the shop manual? Thanks all...

I'm still learning about this stuff myself, but I can tell you this: The "AFC" is The Air Fuel Control and is located on top of the injection pump closest to the firewall on the driver's side of the engine. The housing is held down with 4 bolts and one of them is a break- off tamper proof bolt. I read on here that you can tap a torx bit with a long extension into the head of that break off bolt to remove it. There is a picture of the injection pump in the shop manual and it shows the AFC. One page of my manual calls it an air-fuel control, and the next page calls it an air flow control. The housing slides front to rear. It doesn't move much, but makes a big difference. Maybe someone with more knowledge will add more.

Hope it helped, good luck.

Ron

Thanks for the advice. I adjusted the AFC, as well as the fuel plate, and after some trial and error I've got solid power through all levels.

Thanks again
