Archived Lost prime after fuel filter change?

I can't figure out why the lift pump does not turn on when I I turn the key on after a fuel filter change on my stock '99. I thought I would make it easier to start by filling the canister 3/4 full of fuel before reattaching. What am I forgetting?

It will be embarrassing to have to tow it to the dealer!

Check to make sure you have power and ground at the lift pump after you bump the starter. If you have power and ground and still wont run you need a new pump.

If your canister is not refilling ( after you bump the key) your lift pump is out. To get it started you can fill the canister and hit her with some starting fluid. A vp44 will run without a lift pump, but this in turn ruins the vp44. This happened to me on my 01.



I see you have an aftermarket pump. Is the filter on the pump or are you talking about the stock canister?

My 2002 has the BD pump relocated to the rail. My 99 still has stock lift pump and 160K miles. No Clicking sound from lift pump when key is turned to on or starter bumped. Why the coincidence it fails the day I change the filter? It has felt like it was running out of fuel on WOT lately so I thought the filter was old. Will starter fluid ruin engine?

Thanks JNelson, I fully filled the canister and shot 3seconds of starting fluid and it fired right up. However the lift pump is still not clicking as it was yesterday. Should I drive it or trailer it to the diesel shop for a relocation kit?

the lift pump has probobly been out for a while, but the vp44 lost "its" prime when you changed the filter. If it aint a long drive to the repair shop and she starts in the morning, drive it. As a note, remember to never use starting fluid in the winter - when it hits the intake heater element - KAMBOOM!!

Geno's sells a lift pump relocation kit. I removed the old pump and relocated the pump to the frame rail. It took about 2 hours. Most of the time was used up fooling around and looking for good drill bits to drill through the frame rail.
