I changed my fuel filter and pre filter today. It went pretty easy for being my first time. I did not fill either of the canisters but decided to just prime the system with the primer button. It took a while but soon I had clear fuel coming out tof the bleeder. Truck started up then died, tried again started fine and kept going, Hurray.

Put tools away came back to go for a ride and no start after cranking a long time. Tried bleeding the system again and can't get many bubbles let alone any clear fuel out of the bleeder. I now notice the rubber bulb is cracked on the pump. is this the problem or did I mess up somewhere else?

HELP!

I dont think the rubber priming bootie (Is this what youre talking about?)will stop the engine from starting, or make it lose prime.

You probibally have to bleed the injectors, but first pump the plunger about 100 times (I know you didnt want to hear that) then get someone to pump it for a while.

When both arms are about dead, loosen the large nut that connects the fuel injection line to the injector. 1/2 to 1 full turn should do it.

Crank the engine over, it should start shortly. The loosened lines will make a mess, but that's how you bleed the injectors.

Shut the engine down, then re tighten the inj lines on the injectors.

Viola. Done!

Eric

PS, I have a 98, and I have to crank it a lot when I do the filter, no matter how many times I push that &^%$% plunger.

Ledbetter Beach you mean?

Check that fuel filter and make sure she's full.

And next time you change that filter fill it BEFORE installing.

That's it from just up the 101!!

One caution when filling up your fuel filter. Make sure it's very clean fuel that you have previously filtered and let stand for a while to make sure any sediment settles out. Use a very clean funnel too and be careful nothing else gets in the filter. The fuel you pour into that filter goes right to the injector pump! It's a PITA to pump the new filter full of fuel but you know that it's been filtered before it enters that expensive injector pump.

If the pusher pump primer is wet on the rubber boot it is leaking and allowing air into the system and can cause the condition he is having,,One trick I used to use on my big rig when I changed the fuel filter and do on my Cummins Ram when I do a fuel filter change is this,,Instead of using a refill of fresh diesel fuel I instead fill the fuel filter bowl with Powerservice,,It will help clean the injectors as the truck is started,,You may want to make sure if doen inside you either use a exhaust hose or roll the truck back till the pipe is outside,it will smoke a little more than normal... Got going again

I went down and got some clean fuel from the pump and re-filled the cannister and pre filter. The pre filter was dry and the cannister only was maybe 1/4 full after a long stroking session on that P. O. S. manual pump. I do not think it is working, never had to use it before.

Anyway truck started right up after the re fill and runs fine again. I did not filter the fuel, it was real clean, I heard you guys in some states have alot of junk to worry about. My pre filter was perfectly clean after 20K miles but I changed it anyway, the filter was pretty black though and I plan to change it out more regularly.

Thanks for all the help.

Roger, I change my fuel filter every 12,000... . oil every 6,000. I never knew that there is a "pre-filter"... . where and what is this???

My 96' has 156,000 on it, and have never changed a "pre-filter"... I would really like to know the answer to this! From just down the road in Camarillo, CA. , Thx, Marty
