I have a '99 2500 with about 197,000 miles on it. For the last 3 years or so about every 6 months or so I will loose throttle response, the cruise control will shut off and the check engine light will come on. The engine goes to idle speed for a minute or so and by the time I get pulled over it seems to run OK and the check engine light stays on for a few hours and then turns itself off. Generally, it happens on the cruise control and low throttle openings, 55 - 65 mph.

My lift pump seems to be fine with about 17 lbs of pressure at idle. I have taken the truck to two different Cummins shops after these incidents and in each case the looked for codes and ran some routine with their computer hooked up to the truck and in each case found no problems.

Other than these incidents the truck seems to run fine under all conditions. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

If you do a search for (apps calibration) or (tps calibration) you may come up with the info you need.

The apps/tps can develop a bad spot and cause the symptoms you describe.

apps=(accelerator peddle position sensor) tps=(throttle position sensor)

Hope this helps. Mike

I just had a similar situation with my 2001 2500. I was on cruise at about 70 mph, mil light comes on steady, not blinking. I come off cruise and have no throttle response. I went back to cruise and got to an off ramp. Pulled in, still no throttle. Shut'er down for a couple minutes then fired'er back up and had throttle again. Light still on. Next day I started up, mil light still on, had throttle. A few minutes later light went off and I drove another 800 miles to complete my trip with no further problems.

Local dealer suspects the throttle position sensor, but I haven't had it checked out yet.

I'll let you know if I find something.
