Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) lost turbo whine

recently my turbo became much quieter. i havent made any engine mods and it is hardly able to be heard. i removed the silencer ring a long time ago and it used to almost hurt my ears when it was spooled. i thought maybe i was just getting used to it but my friends and my girlfriend both say it sounds a lot quieter to them also. i havent lost any boost so that is why i am confused.

Have you checked your BHAF lately? Might be caused by a dirty filter which can result in decreased air flow, how many miles are on the turbo, any shaft play?

bhaf is about 2 weeks old. tried that first and it didnt make a difference. i checked the shaft play and it has some but very minor. moves maybe . 02 left to right and none in and out. stock turbo with a 14cm2 exhaust housing 115k miles
