I lost my wallet Friday night about 10:30 pm. I cancelled my two credit cards Sat. morning at 8:00 am. They had already charged about $135. 00 between 2credit cards. Monday morning I put fraud alerts on my credit. This morning I went to the bank and had them flag my account for the tellers so they would make sure it was me or my wife.

Do you guys have anything that I have missed or need to do extra.

I appreciate the replies guys. HO that is one reason I flagged my credit bureau's I am one of those idiots.

My sister was telling me that there is a way for a creditor to call you if you ss# is trying to be used for credit. Anyone know anything about that?

That's part of putting the fraud/theft flag on your files at the credit reporting bureaus. Once that flag is in place, you should be contacted if a new credit account is opened in your name.

I've never lost my wallet, but I do know someone is using my SS# in arizona.

I found out through my health insurance... of all things. :rolleyes:

I did have my CC # stolen, and the CC company called due to "suspect activity" or something like that. They took all the irronius charges off and I never heard a peep after that.

Good luck. I never got the dude in Az straightened out. My credit is still 800 +++ so I dont suppose he's using it for credit... ... ..... yet.

If someone else is using *ANY* of your own identifications, get all of your stuff flagged immediately!

I've heard rumors that you may be able to get a new SS# assigned to you as a result of this, but I'm not finding this on Social Security Online - The Official Website of the U. S. Social Security Administration. WAIT! Here we go: Identity Theft And Your Social Security Number

From the SSA's FAQ:
Question

How can I get a different Social Security number assigned to me?
Answer

Generally, we assign only one Social Security number to an individual. We use that number to record the individual's earnings so that we can determine future benefits and, eventually, to track benefits paid. Only under the following circumstances can we assign a different number:

* Sequential numbers assigned to members of the same family are causing problems;
* More than one person has been assigned, or is using, the same number;
* An individual has religious or cultural objections to certain numbers or digits in the original number; (See “Can I request a new SSN because I object to digits used?”)
* A victim of identity theft continues to be disadvantaged by using the original number; (See Identity Theft And Your Social Security Number, Publication No. 05-10064. ) or
* Situations of harassment, abuse or life endangerment (including domestic violence). (See New Numbers For Domestic Violence Victims, Publication No. 05-10093. )

for the last two years, I've kept fraud alerts in place at all times. Part of it is the request for authorization at a given phone number before anything is authorized. A little inconvenient, but i don't want to deal with the alternative. It needs to be renewed every 90 days. It takes 30 seconds on a keyboard.

I've lost my wallet twice. After the first time, I learned the "must-do" thing everyone should do. Get a state ID card that parallels the drivers license. Get an emergency credit card that never gets used. Keep them available just in case you lose your wallet, and you won't be financially frozen when it happens. A passport is also a good idea.

jkalchik I've had SS tell me that if theyre not screwing with my credit, there isnt much they can do.

Not exact words, that's a paraphrase.

This was about 10 years back when this was much less prevalent.

We had/have a back up credit card that has not been used but a couple of times. I filled up with it on Tuesday and they shut it down. Got ahold of them and let'em know that we were using now.

I should have mentioned I'll use the backup card for internet purchases, which isn't often. A couple times every three months. That insulates my main card from getting caught up in internet fraud, and isolates all internet purchases to one card. I run zero balances, but if you keep the spare card, it especially should have a zero balance.
