lots of black smoke at startup...

A friend of mine has been experiencing lots of black smoke at initial startup since he bought his truck. The truck is stock and has only 3k miles on it. Injectors have been tested for leaks and all passed. Any other ideas? TIA

I'd check the intake grid heater function, as its designed specifically to reduce emissions during warm-up by heating the incoming air right at the intake manifold.
