My 05 has started smoking. Not just a little but like a sled pulling rig! It makes no direrence if my box is on or off, if I am running empty or pulling 10,000 lbs. Also I have always had a slight rattle(sounds like detonation in a gas rig) under heavy. About a month ago i started noticing it was getting worse and more often, now the last two tanks of fuel i have been laying down the smoke??? Fuel milage is still the same, EGT's right in there for the load, but am seeing about 5 psi less boost than before this started. Is it possible i have a damaged turbo, but not so bad as to create a No boost situation? I just read on another thread that a loose injector can cause a profound rattle will check in the morning but... ... ? Any ideas or sugestions? I have enough electrical/computer problems with my 00 not looking forward to this one. Thanks

You might have an injector that is bad. Check your oil level, you might have fuel in it. If the injector is bad and it is dumping that much fuel into your engine then you need to get it looked at soon. The only problem is that box is going to give DC the ability to void your warr.

Good luck Oo.

If it is an injector please go to the poll and let us know what cylinder it failed with.

There is a Dodge Tech that has seen most them on the number 3 and 4 cylinders and was asking if others were seeing same.

I agree that you need to have checked quickly, as more smoke is more fuel.

I wonder if the poll should have been set up to include stock and modified as well, while most of the posters in this form have modified their trucks vs those that have not, it would still give us even more data to determine why injectors are failing.

What box and how long have you had it?

If your not making oil it is probably not an injector. Excessive black smoke is one indication of a rail relief valve not holding the pressure and messing up the injection events.

If your boost is 5 psi lower than normal I would say you're not getting enough air flow. Check for loose air lines, after cooler leaks, or maybe a bad mass flow sensor.

If you suspect an injector dumping extra fuel into a given cylinder you can grab an infrared heat gun and check the exhaust gas temp from each cylinder. Don't get too excited if you see #6 quite a bit higher (100-200 deg F)than the others since this is normal due to the engine design.

My Truck info is not showing will figure that out as time permits. I have a Banks Six Gun w/speed loader option, banks intake, and e-brake by jacobs... . No fuel in the oil,But there was some grit on the fuel filter and found the lovely opening left in our fuel tanks by DC. When i drove this truck off the lot it was with the knowledge that it would never again see the inside of a dodge garage, and @ 1800 miles i changed the fluids and and added the banks parts. Its the combo of more smoke and the rattle that has me freakin out, if it was just smoking i would just think it was good fuel, or just the rattle and would chalk it up to the weird rattle that is suposed to be common to the common rails... . thanks again for your time and help.

P. S. current milage is 52,000

where is the relief valve and how do I check it?

Its just behind the air intake on the top of the intake manifold. Brass looking fitting about 4" tall and has a line the runs down to the fuel filter housing. The best way to check it put a gauge on the rail pressure and see if it is going up when demanded. A DRBIII scanner will tell you demanded pressure and actual pressure. You can pull the line of and the bolt out of the top for a quick check. There should be no leakage past the valve. Since your boost dropped have you checked all the boots and connections and the IC?

MAP sensor, fubared six gun, or boost leak... the ECM fuels these trucks off a boost signal. If it is reading a faulty boost signal (higher than actual) then it will start fueling early, which equals lots of black smoke. When it starts fueling early, it's like the injection timing is advanced and hence you would get the rattle.

Does the six gun plug into the MAP sensor?

Does it do the same thing if the six gun is physically disconnected? I don't mean "turned off" since lots of these boxes still do boost fooling in the "off" position?

Thanks for all the quick responses!! It seems the MAP was the culprit and now Ole Silver is running better than new. THANKS Again
