Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Lots of Smoke? Everything Else Ok

I have been noticing a lot more black smoke out the trail pipe than usual. I am even getting some light smoke with the edge turned off, on 5 of the edge you can't see behind me for a while (my students think it cool). Power seems the same, WOT getting 42 psi of boost(normal), EGTs are coming up a little faster than normal. I am running straight ULS Diesel. I did just clean the pro guard 7 air filter. Fuel pressure solid at 16 psi. 264,000 miles, truck sits more now, I drive it once or twice a week 50 to 100 miles. any ideas?

I had the same thing happen to me I freaked I changed the filters took an oil sample and sent it off ( sample came back good to go ) removed fuel that I didnt get at normal source and replaced it with normal source fuel and smoke quit and have had no problems. But it made me think about it because it REALLY SMOKED when I put my foot in it. Thank goodness for all the extra filtration I have installed.

I'm glad I saw your post. I was having concerns about my truck smoking more than normal for the last month or so. I use waste oil in my truck (5-!0%) but I stopped it but it continued to smoke just as bad. So I don't think thats it. We're fairly close together as far as location. Do you suppose that there was a bad load of fuel that came from the pipeline from Texas? I get my fuel from Hess. I have the extra filters in addition to the stock filter. This gets me to wondering. My truck runs fine both idling and at speed. I think both our areas are supplied from the Greensboro terminal pipeline.

Right now I fill up about once a month and I am trying to remember where I filled up last. I think it was in Greenwood SC at a former BP that went to some off lable. I have 3/4 tank right now with 270 miles on it. I think I will add some injector cleaner/celtane boost and see what that does.

A dirty or flaky IAT or MAP sensor could potentially cause this kind of problem.

if it's hotter and more humid out than normal, i've noticed increased levels of smoke too

I have a 2000 3/4 ton that suddenly started smoking REALLY bad. Took it to Orangevale Diesel and they found the #4 injector was bad.

i am in NC also and noticed my 01 smoking more, i will pull the map sensor and check it out and iat also.
