Archived question on installing fuel pressure gauge

while driving home the other night, moderately getting on it (5th gear 30 PSI) enging made a funny noise then it happeded. Sounded like a gasser with a terrible exhaust leak, white smoke pouring out of the tailpipe, egt's about 100 degrees hotter than normal, oil pressure was good and engine temp was normal. Now truck idles terribly, and white smoke is coming out of the exhaust pretty good. I did a little messing with the truck to try to diagnose it and found that when i crack injector lines 2, 3, or 4 no change in idle is noticed and fuel spurts out arond the injection line. When I crack 1 or 5 the trucks idle changes notcieable, appears to get worse. I didn't crack the number six line since it is way in the back. I even swapped out the #3 and #1 injector, the #1 injector appeared cleaner than the #3, but it made no difference in the way the engine ran. I have no service engine lights, and the guages(other than EGT about 100 hotter) appears normal. The turbo spins freely and I notice no exess play in the turbine. I tried to smell the exhaust and it smells more dieselly than before. When you rev the motor it sounds like it is missing on several cylinders. Oil level appeared fine, nice and black. I am not sure what level the antifreeze was at, it says add, but it might have been that way before. So what does it sound like is wrong with the truck??

Wouldn't surprise me if it is the fuel injection pump, or maybe a headgasket.

Check the coolant and levels to make sure you aren't making or losing either. Check for air bubbles in the coolant, too, so we can rule out the HG.

I had a simliar problem with a 8. 3L cummins. What I had found was wrong was in the vavle train. I had a tappet break, and tore up a camshaft. I would check the push tubes make sure there not bent or broke around the ends, check the rocker arm assemblys to make sure there not broke. If every things seems to be ok it just might be a broking tappet. Good luck I hope this helps you.
