I not to long ago took my truck in to have the valves ajusted. right after it was dun I started hearing a noise like a squealing belt but it was comming from the turboside of the engyn. I took it back and was told that it was the air going throu the turbo (it has changed, the way the air goes thrue the turbo?). Now the noise is gitting real loud and I think that the egyn is going to fly apart. :confused: Has any one ever had a idea of what it might be and why.

Sfelts - is your 97 a recent purchase for you, I noticed you just registered. If it's new to you it's possible the silencer ring was removed by previous owner. Or maybe the snorkel has worked it's way into the air filter box. Either way if this is the case not to worry, I removed both of mine shortly after purchase.

If they are still there, I'd check the hoses from the turbo to the inter-cooler and from the inter-cooler to the intake. I just did my valves and don't remember having to remove any turbo hoses to do so.

Other than that I'd go back to the shop and be a nice squeeky wheel till you get some grease.

Good luck

Well it oficaly stoped me from going to work today. It was so bad this morning I turnedaround and came home. It makes the sound whin under a small and big load. This morning it maid the noise right from the start. I still have a 4000 miles on the warnnty. so I will take it in.

I will post what the problem was whin they let me know. But it sounds like the valves to me. (on cyilnder 6) that is in additon to the nois the gatevalve is making in the turbo. and I now know that their is a fix for the gatevalve. Found it on the TSB.

I am the orignal owner of the truck and have made no changes to the thing. excped for the K&N filter. have made all regular mantance stated by the book. I thnk they scrued it up whin I took it in last. Never had a problem with it till I took it to them. :-{}

well have to call a tow truck now talk to you latter. :mad: :{

Sorry to hear that. I agree w/you about the valves being the culpert now that I know you were to original owner, and wish you luck with the problem.

Ok I have rtecived the word on the noise. It was the seal on the EGR valve. Has anyone ever herd of the seal going out on a EGR befor? I sure havent. :( And they are not going to cover the seal whitch means I have to pay for all the labor 138$ to change a 10$ part. It allso means that they wont pay for the rental car. 30$ a day for 4 days. Boy theas guys suck. My wife is ripping thim a new one. :--)

EGR

I would ask them if the EGR was leaking externally or internally. The noise would be the vacuum/pressure leaking one way or the other. Kind of funny it went bad. I wonder if they stepped/leaned on it, or got fluid sprayed on it during the valve adjustment process.

How many miles are on your truck anyway??,,I thought emissions troubles were covered till the Cummins warranty was out,you might want to do some research on it... .....

emission warranty

Read the owners manual. It will say what it is. My 99 2500, non CA emissions, has an emissions warranty for only 24k miles. The 3500s have it for 5/50 I think. The CA trucks get it for a little longer I believe. A 24V lift pump is under emissions coverage, so those who get it paid for out of warranty are lucky. I footed the bill (actually my extended warrantee did) at 38k miles.

The dodge guys said that they dono't warnty any of the emishion parts on the desels. That is right off the computer from Cristler. The book that Came with the truck says 5 years and 100,000 miles(short tearm warnty). The Long term is 7 years 70,000 miles. bothe cover the same things. The short term covers all emishion related equipment and componemnt parts(eg. gaskets).

The weard thing is the EGR gaskets are medal. and two of thim were broke at the same end. :confused:

There probably was a high spot on the mounting surface or the EGR that put a little bit of pressure on those gaskets. Over time, the thermal cycles of the engine cracked the gaskets and they blew out or gradually wore out. One more thing to watch out for on the diesels I guess.

You are right on your warranty. For the 99 years, CA trucks have 5/100k short warranty and 7/70k long term emission warranty. The difference there is the long term emissions applies to the catalyst, cylinder head, EGR control module, fuel pump, and the turbocharger. The short term affects everything else emissions-wise. EGR gaskets would be under the 5/100k short term clause.

Glad to hear your problem was found and fixed.

Yes it was found and fixed and I am happy about that. But they say that it is not coverd. So on to small clames cort we go:rolleyes:
