in my 12valve there is a loud ticking noise under the hood on the driver side. Goin on a trip and dont want to be stranded. any help would be great.

It could be a lot of things , a common one is the lift pump , one way to look for noises is to go to a parts house , tool truck , look for a stethoscope that has a rod at the end with a diaphragm between the hose & rod , these are for touching suspected noise makers , you just touch what ever you think may be the cause , I also put a metal line in place of the rod & diaphragm to listen for exhaust & vacuum leaks .

a new lift pump at Cummins Atlantic is 80 bucks . I stretched the spring on my relief valve and stopped the clacking . the pump rod seems to make a lot of noise when the relief valve is letting to much fuel pass.

Only looked at a couple of 12 valvers. I know on my last two trucks a loud ticking noise was one of the clamps holding the injection lines was loose and "ticked". Tightened it up and all was well.

Just a thought.

i have a buddy with a 97 12v, and it ticks real loud. sounds like high pressure blow off or somthing, either liquid or air... either way it seems to be what yall are talking about. im pretty certain its the lift pump. how difficult is it to get to the relief valve spring to strech it?

The relief valve is really called a overflow valve & stretching is for helping to making run better on the way to the parts house , it will not last , needs to be new .
But 1st up is testing , fuel pressure test , about 25 psi idle , 36 at WOT , if not pinch return line to see if pressure comes up , if it does then overflow valve , if not lift pump , then after test again , may need OFV also .

I havn't heard the ticking noise for a while now and I think that it could be the loose clamp on the back of the turbo. But am not sure I will make a point to check the next time. But it seems to only do it on a load like pulling a hill!
