Normal cold start?

I have a 03 305/555. I have a loud ticking sound and I can feel it in line #1,

all other lines have no vibration at all. I did a search and found a few posts

where others had similar problems. What I would like to know is what the

dealer did to fix it. was it an easy fix (in and out with a new injector) or

did they say drop off the truck and we will call you in a week, or

tell you it is normal. Is it possible this will do any damage? thanks

You are probably talking about the infamous knock. I believe on every truck if you touch the #1 injector line you can feel it hammering away. I believe this is due to the long span across which that line passes without any clamps (pressure pulses travel along the line as the injector is actuated and they remain undamped by clamps).

Anyway, a loud knocking may not be normal. Mine did it off and on for over 30000 miles but has not done it in quite some time now (I'm waiting for it to come back).

There are tons of threads about this. Here are a few I recommend reading:

This one

A great one with sound!

thanks r. b. that was some good info. before i go on on I want to clarify that

I am not concerned about my truck being quiet. what i am concerned with is

that it is making a distinctively different sound than it did the first 25000 miles

that i drove it. everybodys discription of ticks, knocks, and normal diesel noise is relative to their own experience. my truck developed a Knock/tick

that was not present until recently. truck now has 31000 miles.

Runs good, pulls great, gets 19. 5mpg @ 70mph empty, I am more than

willing to live with the noise if i know it is not hurting th motor. Thoughts?

comments?

Mine does the same thing, knocks and number one line pulses. I wouldn't mind the knock if they were all knocking the same. Took it to dealer and he says nothing wrong. He said that they lifted hoods on other ones and they all sound the same. My truck didn't make that noise when I bought it. Sounds like a gasser with one bad lifter. Have about 11,000 miles on it

I really wish I could offer you guys more advice, but this issue is just so clouded that I don't think there are any answers. Like Thames points out, if you go to the dealer most of them will tell you it's normal (my dealer did). Well, let's face it: we all know it's not "normal". So the next question is: is it harming anything? It sure sounds like it.

My attitude on the matter is that I have a 5-year 100k engine warranty. If the engine melts itself down during that period then DC has to give me a new one. If they deny my warranty coverage (due to my aftermarket bedliner), then I will pull the engine and have someone like Scheid or Piers rebuild it for me (cheaper than a new one). I love working on stuff, so hopefully it would be "fun" (my optimism coming through here). ;)

Did you guys see where Mathew over on the "KA-POW (now what)" thread swapped injector holes and it cured the knock? What the heck is that all about!? Like I said, the issue is so confusing and most dealers are so uneducated about these trucks that you pretty much have to wait for a major failure before anyone will do anything.

Here's one interesting fact: I don't read about many people on here who had the knock and blew up an engine. In fact, I can't recall a single person in here who had a truck with a knock that actually did melt a piston or do some catastrophic damage. That's very interesting... someone else correct me if there was someone I'm forgetting about.

The knock on my truck (sounded like someone hitting the side of the block with a claw hammer) wasn't there when I first bought it. It came and went. One day I pointed it out to my dealer just to see what he'd say and of course he said "they all do that... it's normal".

Sounds an awful lot like the "cackle" in the Ford 7. 3s when they went to high pressure injectors back in '99. Lots of guys heard it, interestingly it was on #8 I think, also the longest fuel line run. I don't think it ever hurt one of those engines though many insisted it wasn't "normal" My '99. 5 7. 3 now has 250k reliable miles under its belt. I think these high pressure injection systems definately are the cause of the funny noises we hear. Unless it starts sounding REALLY bad or the drivability/fuel milage changes, I wouldn't worry.

the "cackle" is in the 1400-1800rpm band on the powerstrokes. the "idle knock" is caused by the fuel lines back all they into the tank suck air and cause a misfire one #6 and #8 (maybe more?). obviously cackle goes with it.

beyond that i don't know enough about the 3rd gen motors, though i'm seeing a bunch of posts on different cylinders knocking.

what about taking it to a cummins dealer?
